EPD EXPLANATIONS

Calving Ease Direct (CED) , is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW) , expressed in pounds, is a predic- tor of a sire's ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW) , expressed in pounds, is a predic- tor of a sire's ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) , is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Stayability (STAY) , Predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters remaining productive until at least six years of age. Marbling EPD (Marb) , expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. ASA GOLD SIRE & DAM

The ASA Gold Sire and Dam program recognizes Salers breeders’ top producing cows within a herd based on number of calves weaned per cow exposed and weaning weight of calves. Cows and sires can be recognized from any environment because the list is based on within herd performance. • Gold Dams must have had a calf before they are 2.3 years of age and calve within a 395 day calving interval which allows the producers to calve heifers earlier than the main cow herd. • Dam’s must have a minimum of three natural (non-ET) calves with an average weaning ratio greater than 105. • These are the top quality most efficient cows in a herd. Only 2% of the registered cows make the Golden Dam list. Gold Sires - Salers bulls can earn the title of Gold Sires by siring five or more Gold Dams. Gold dams and Sires can be identified in Salers pedigrees by an (*) behind each name in the pedigree.
