KEY SCHOOL DATES

After last week’s release of our first Summer edition magazine, this is the first parental bulletin of the half term. If you haven’t already, be sure to read it by clicking here. Just before the half term break, two trips went out. The Year 10 German students had an amazing time in Boppard and really enjoyed soaking up the culture, whilst our

Year 8 students had such fun in Osmington Bay. Additionally, our first Bronze Duke of Edinburgh practice expeditions took place over the weekend in the Surrey Hills. You will be able to read more about these trips in our final magazine at the end of term. It has been an incredibly busy couple of weeks since our return. Last week we particularly enjoyed welcoming our Year 7 families into school. Year 7 students loved having the opportunity to show off the school, I do hope that this brought their tales of school to life. Our Year 10 Geographers completed their field work studies in Teddington in preparation for their coursework. Our Year 12 Sociologists visited the Central Criminal Court, better known as the Old Bailey, as an introduction to their course on Crime and Deviance. We also welcomed public speaking coaches into school to work with students in Year 9 and 10 who devised speeches inspired by their trip to Kensington Palace before half term. It was fantastic to hear the different issues the students identified. Please note that we are holding a preloved uniform sale on Saturday 22 June, this will be an opportunity to stock up on uniform for the year ahead whilst also supporting the school to raise vital funds. Please donate any unwanted items to school via reception or the Key Stage Hubs.

The Art of Brilliance are leaders in the field of positive psychology. Recently, they shared some thought-provoking information about how emotions are contagious and how far that contagion spreads. The science of positive psychology reports that a happy friend makes us 25% happier, a happy sibling raises our happiness by 14% and a happy neighbour raises our happiness by an impressive 34%. This is because emotions have a ‘hyper-dyadic spread’ – they pass from person to person, beyond an individual’s direct social ties. However, positivity is a learned behaviour and, unfortunately, the ripple effect also works with negativity. Supporting our children to be more optimistic and modelling positivity can be powerful vectors for creating far-reaching positive change. More of the Art of Brilliance’s insights can be found in their light-hearted and accessible blog here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

It has been a pleasure welcoming Year 12 students back into their lessons following the half term. While we are in the last half term of the year, it is important to maintain high standards and focus right until the end of term. Many subjects have started Year 13 content, which will be more demanding and challenging. I am pleased to say that Year 12 are making the most of the opportunities available to them, attending talks, and engaging in su - pra-curricular activities in addition to their studies. Last week, our Year 12 Sociologists visited the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) on Thursday. They were able to watch some high-profile criminal cases in action, including a double attempted murder and a multi-million-pound drug trafficking case. After lunch, they met with one of the magistrates for a talk on the various roles within the court system. The students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the day, which provided valuable insight into the criminal justice system ahead of our Year 13 Crime and Deviance topic. Our A Level Art students began the year with a series of workshops responding to the theme ‘Human Boundaries.’ Last week, they completed their first exam, developing their own themes and creating excellent responses inspired by their own religious or cultural beliefs, the overload of information in today’s society, nuclear war, and the Post Office scandal. Well done to all staff and students involved; their creations are visually stunning and very thought-provoking. This week, fashion students have been busy working hard, completing their exams over the course of three days. We are excited to see the incredible work they produce to showcase their creativity and skills. On Friday, Year 12 had a talk from local MP Munira Wilson. Over the coming weeks, they will also get the chance to hear from the Conservative and Labour candidates. This will culminate in a mock general election at the school. This is a great opportunity to enable students to become more politically aware and interested in the upcoming general election. Parents will shortly receive a monitoring report on their child’s progress and mock performance. A reminder that UCAS predictions have not been made yet and are based on a number of different factors; they are not the same as the teacher predictions on the report. Any questions, please do get in contact.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton

Some will recognise this title as a place in Macbeth, part of one of the witches’ deceiving prophecies to Macbeth. Fittingly then, this story, set in modern-day New Zealand, is all about the false promises of big business and the climate crisis. Following a group of ‘eco-warriors’ and their dealings with a deceitful billionaire over some precious land, it develops characters and relationships in a compelling way, building to a thriller-like conclusion. It’s unlike anything I’ve read recently; I’d really recommend it.
