blueprint for each life, and it is His great desire that each life might be lived according to His plan and pat tern. “I beseech you therefore, breth ren,” His Word says, “. . . that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice” (Rom. 12:1). Answering this challenge, we can pl^ce our lives in His control, and He is able to work out His per fect will. This pencil, when it is under my control, writes the messages I desire; so the life which is yielded to the Lord Jesus becomes the bearer of His message as found in the Word of God and carries out in every detail His will. Which pencil represents you? Have you accepted the Lord Jesus as your own Saviour? And if so, have you surrendered your life to His control so that the “good, and acceptable, and perfect w ill of God” might be wrought out?—M. S. H. Another interesting needle is that of the compass. Its sole work is to point true. Lives are preserved as ships keep straight course, all be cause the needle of a mariner’s com pass, quivering with intensity, points faithfully to the North Pole, to which it is drawn by magnetic power. Our actions and words can p o i n t true. Drawn by Christ, is your life pointing' to Him? Are those around you in the darkness of sin able to find guidance, seeing that the needle of your witness and living for Christ points true? Mother’s needle, the t e l e g r a p h needle, the surgeon’s needle, the pack ing needle, and the needle of the com pass—each one can “tell”’ us some thing about the Christian life. Shall we not do what they say? SCRIPTURE: “I beseech, you there fore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a diving sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good,* and acceptable, and per fect w ill of God” (Rom. 12:1, 2). OBJECTS: Two lead pencils. One should be placed in a clear glass jar or bottle that is covered by a lid. LESSON: I have with me today, boys and girls, two pencils which remind me very much of men and women and boys and girls like you. Let us consider first of all the pen cil in the jar. You can see it there, can’t you? And although it has an eraser, good lead, and is well sharp ened, yet it is of no use at all as long as it remains in the jar. It needs to be removed from the jar and placed in the hand of some one. Then it can be used. Many people are like this pencil in the jar. They are of no use to the Lord nor to their friends either, be cause they are held captive by sin. They need to be set free from the bonds of sin and death by accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour (Acts 16:31). Then, under the control of His loving hand, their ,lives w ill become useful to the Lord by proclaiming the good news of the gospel. Let us now look at the second pen cil. Controlled by my hand, see how nicely it writes upon this piece of pa per. So thé life that is controlled by the Lord serves in His will. He longs to control your life, to work out in your life His ^special plan which He planned in the eternal council cham ber (Eph. 2:10). A Packet of Needles By H erbert L ockyer

Did you know that needles can tell us a story God wants us to know? Let us look at a packet of needles and discover what we can learn from the many different needles people use. First of all, there is Mother’s needle, - and what a long life it has! Why, it never seems to rest! Mending and making, patching and stitching, a but ton here, a tape there, and a tear somewhere else! The needle of young Samuel’s mother is a famous needle, for example, seeing she made Samuel a coat every year. Mother’s ordinary needle may be small; yet it helps to keep the home together. In fact, Moth er w ill tell you that it is the most useful thing she has. God can use the life of every boy or girl who loves the Lord Jesus as Saviour and who is real ly willing to be useful in everyday life. Then there is the telegraph needle. As a boy I used to love watching the old telegraphic machine, w i t h i t s needle busy on the dial, working with, lightning speed, spelling out messages sent from all parts of the land. It seemed to me that that needle almost had life and reason as it moved so rapidly, telling out its messages. Are we among God’s telegraph needles, telling out to all around His message of love and grace? If we love the Lord Jesus, our work is to pass on to a needy world all we receive from God and His Word. Another needle is that of the surr geon. Sometime ago I read of a man who had been stabbed in the heart, but a gifted surgeon performed a deli-, cate operation with a needle, and, stitching up the wounds, saved the man’s life. A surgeon’s needles are varied, but all are valuable. They may be dreaded, yet all are necessary. The knife, and needle can work wonders in our human bodies. And because we live in a world broken by sin, and torn by sorrow, there are many wounds in people’s lives, not just in their ac tual bodies, that we can help to heal. Is your life as a needle in the hand of the heavenly Surgeon? Further, as surgeons only use needles that have been thoroughly sterilized, our lives are only useful as they are clean and pure. The packing needle is also a valu able possession. Varying in size and strength, packing needles are usually thick and curved and are able to pene trate thick cloths and bind large bun dles together. Have you realized that God has a packing needle? Listen to Job, as he says in the Word of God, “My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine in iquity” (14:17). Have your sins been sewn up tightly in that bag? Once God sews up the bag, no one is able to open it and pry into its contents.
