demanded a help meet like him in dignity and powers. Nothing in the mere animal -world could be found.
that the principle should be first ut tered here, for the family is about to be instituted, and the-fam ily is the basic form of all social life-. The practice of “isolationism” is definitely bad, not a normal state for man. It is not surprising, therefore, that the best modern psychologists tell us that a human personality reaches its high est and finest development while liv ing in social relation with other human personalities. One of the most terrible results of sin is that it divides and separates men from each other. Salvation in Christ brings men to gether. 2. The great principle stated above could never have, been uttered by a Unitarian God. If there were only one lone person in the Godhead, and man were made in the image of that God, then ' it might have been good for man to be alone. But in the God of ■the Bible this great principle of the value of the social life is found im bedded in the very nature of the God head. For our God is not one Person, but Three Persons existing from all eternity, thus proving that “isolation ism” is contrary to the nature of God Himself. The religion of Unitarianism, therefore, does not mark an advance of the human mihd. It is rather an-ab normality, a step backward intellec tually, a denial of any metaphysical basis to the social life. 3. "And Adam gave names . . . to every.beast of the field" (v..20). Here we find something that sets the first man absolutely apart from the animal world. Adam had the gift of speech. Now animals are able to produce cer tain reactions in each other by the Utterance of distinctive sounds and cries. But this- is riot what Adam had. Or perhaps we should say that he had something vastly more than this. He had the marvelous ability to. in vent and use language symbols. Only man is able to do this thing, and it puts him in a class by himself,,' absolutely apart from the animal world. Now the reason that man can do this is because he has a rational mind capable of reflective thought. In answer to the question, “Why doesn’t a pig talk?” a very intelligent man replied, “Because he has nothing to say!” If the pig had anything to say, he undoubtedly would find a way to say it. Men who are deaf mutes find ways to communicate ideas, But the animal has no ideas, hence never invents or uses language symbols. 4. This ability to think reflectively and to use language symbols, pos sessed by the first man, was one reason that in the entire animal world there was found no "help meet for him" (v. 20). Literally, there was found nothing "answering to" him (v. 18, R.V. margin). The high dignity of man, created in the image of God,.
trusted Him to do whatever was nec essary, She said to the servants, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” The Lord Jesus directed the servants to pour pure water into water pots and then -to draw out the liquid and serve it to the guests. He had met the peo ple’s need that day. He had shown them, too, that He was the Son of God. Do you think they were glad He had been invited to share this happy occasion?
