Ephesians 5*28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. Outline and Exposition £ T he M otive of T rust in G od (Ex. & 1 -4 ) , A MEAM was a Kohathite, of the / \ tribe!* of Levi, and Jochebed his A V wife was of the same tribe (Ex. 6:18, 20). Their people were despised and distressed, being ground down by the cruelty and hatred of the Egyp tians. The family doubtless was poor in this world’s goods, though rich in faith. So evil were the times that babies were being cast out to die lest they multiply in Egypt (cf. Acts 7:18, 19). But this was a godly family, both Amram and Jochebed giving ample proof of their trust in God. With their lives at stake, they feared not the wrath of the king, but hid their child in an "ark of bulrushes” by the bank of the river. Father and mother each had a part in this action of faith (cf. Heb. 11:23).

Whatever Moses learned of ' the philosophies of Egypt must have been counterbalanced by the prayers of his godly parents. Thus it was that he held to God’s way and in later years became God’s servant in a position of mighty leadership. It is plain that the motive which strengthened the family life in ‘which Moses was born was his parents’ unfaltering trust in God. II. T he M otive of C hoosing G od (Josh. 24:14, 15) Joshua challenged his people to fear the Lord, that is, to serve Him in sincerity and truth, renouncing all other gods, and cleaving only to the one true and living God. They had a free choice in the matter. Thdlr decision was to be made voluntarily. Adding force to the challenge, Josh ua spoke of his own decision and his example. He would not ask them to do that which he himself was un willing to do. But he declared, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Faithfulness to both his people and his God was the motive that ruled Joshua and his family. III. T he M otive of O bedience to G od (Eph. 5:28-31; 6:1-4) As the members of the human body obey the dictates of the head, so be lievers, the members of Christ’s body, are to obey the dictates of Christ their Head. Obeying Him, men are to love their wives as they love themselves, and do good to each member of the family, protecting, providing- for, and nourishing each one (Eph. 5:28-31). Christian children are to obey their parents "in the Lofd” (Eph. 6:1-3). Christian parents are instructed in the proper nurture and training of their children. They are to bring them up in the admonition of the Lord, and this without antagonizing them (v. 4). There never w ill be found any thing to take the place of simple obedience to the Word of God, by children and by parents alike, for the strengthening of family •life. Points and Problems 1. "When she could not longer hide him" (Ex. 2:3). We find set forth in this Exodus story an exhibition of true mother love. This love, as it appears in the mother of Moses, was not only intense but also intelligent. Happy is that home where the mother ■loves her children both strongly and wisely. Most mothers love their chil dren, but in altogether too many, love is not characterized by intelligent planning for their future. They think only of the present. Only a true mother c o u l d possibly understand' what it cost the mother of Moses to carry out Jier plan, but it saved his
