And trust God’s silence when He does not speak. For He whose name is Love will send the best. —Selected. Unafraid “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? . . . thanks «be unto God, which giveth us the victory through our LordTJesus Christ” (1 Cor. 15:55, 57). Irk all ages men have sought to dis cover the elixir of life to cheat death as long as possible. Why did the early Christians so eagerly welcome that which is shunned as something repulsive by most men? It was be cause of their faith and hope in Christ. They possessed the gift of eternal life, a life which death could not .touch. Knowing that death would open the door to a larger, fuller, grander, richer life—a life so infi nitely greater that this present life is unworthy of comparison—why should they regard it with apprehension? Why should we?—Arthur Hedley.

9. Duty and Mystery “Let Us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily «beset us. . . Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of,our faith” (Heb. 12:1, 2 ). Life is a piece of duty conjoint with a piece of mystery. Our duty is “to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.” The mystery is the reality Of the leader ship of thè Captain of our-‘salvation, who combines in Himself the three fold office of- Prophet, Priest, and King.—Jeremy Taylor. 10. A Deeper Best “Behold, God is my salvation; 1 will trust, and not be afraid” (Isa. 12 : 2 ). God answers prayer; sometimes when hearts are weak He gives the very! gifts believers j seek; But often faith must learn a deeper rest’

8. Satisfying Waters “ As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God” CPsa. 42:1)-. “Thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures” (Psa. 36:8). Snow-fed springs soon join to form a small mountain stream that winds its way down the canyon. The thirsty deer seeks this stream, and the. psalmist uses the incident to describe his thirst for God. The weary traveler stops to have a refreshing drink of cool water. So God makes us to drink from the river of satisfaction if we put Him first in our lives. How strange it' is that thousands of people these days have forsaken the water of life and have rather sought to satisfy the craving of their hearts in the pleas ures of the world! —Fred Hartley Wight.*
