THE PERSIAN NEW YEAR A Fresh Start Every Spring
Many Americans consider November and December “the holiday season.” Those months include some of the country’s most popular holidays, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Eve. Spring doesn’t usually bring out the same emotions, even though it hosts its fair share of holidays. In the States, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and Easter nationally, but others will celebrate many other holidays or religious events, like Passover, Ramadan, Lent, and Vaisakhi. Spring also brings one of my favorite holidays you might not be familiar with. We’ll celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year, on March 20 this year! People have been celebrating Nowruz for over 3,000 years. While you’d imagine a holiday that old would have some religious affiliation, it’s actually all about cultivating hope for the future and shedding the past. It’s essentially a celebration of all things new! One of the most vital parts of Nowruz is setting the Haft Sin table. My family would always place seven symbolic items that start with the Farsi letter “S” on our table. These often included wheatgrass, dried food, vinegar, and various herbs. The items we placed on the table represented different aspects of life, such as health, prosperity, and knowledge. The Persian New Year always aligns with the vernal equinox, and we celebrate as soon as the sun crosses the equator. At that moment, the whole family would gather around the Haft Sin table to welcome the new year. Sometimes, this wouldn’t occur until 2 a.m.! Even then, we would still be there dressed in our vibrant, new clothes to welcome back the light! Interestingly enough, Nowruz actually goes hand in hand with the idea of spring-cleaning. Since the holiday is all about starting fresh, many people will perform a deep-cleaning of their homes. My family would go through every cabinet and scrub the house from top to bottom. This has always provided us with a great opportunity to go through all our things and determine what we can donate to those in need. Once Nowruz has passed and a new year is officially underway, most people in Iran enjoy a couple of weeks off from work to travel and visit family. When I was growing up, my family would use this time to
travel to Isfahan, which was the historic capital of Iran from 1598 to the 1720s.
In Iran, it’s customary for the younger members of each family to visit older family members. My father was
younger than most of our relatives, so it was always on us to travel. My older relatives eagerly anticipated our arrival in Isfahan. They were always at
home waiting when we made it and were ready to give us gold coins, as is tradition. They had pastries and other delicious foods prepared for us. It was always a great time, and I still have the small gold coins I collected throughout my youth during Nowruz festivities.
While some Persians I know in the U.S. still keep up with their Nowruz traditions, I’m not necessarily one of them. I’ve been in this country since I was 15 years old and am much more likely to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve than Nowruz. However, whenever spring arrives, I still spend some time reflecting on my experiences in Iran celebrating Nowruz. It’s a great way to refocus my
energy and mindset so I can start spring with a fresh perspective.

Sleep Apnea Doesn’t Have to Control Your Life
Here’s How to Take Charge
Sleep apnea is a growing concern in our country. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine reports that 25 million adults in the U.S. are currently struggling with sleep apnea. While those who have never experienced sleep apnea may believe it’s nothing more than an occasional snore, it’s actually a serious condition where breathing repeatedly stops for 10 seconds or longer during sleep. The most common type, obstructive sleep apnea, occurs when the airways become blocked. Several factors can cause this sensation, including excess weight, allergies, smoking, and even hormonal changes. Waking up in the middle of the night due to sleep apnea can be a frightening experience as you choke or gasp for air. The interruptions in your breathing can trigger an increase in carbon monoxide, causing your brain to wake
you from your slumber to ensure you start breathing normally again. These constant interruptions can devastate your sleep quality, leaving you feeling groggy, irritable, or less alert.
A great starting point is to look into getting a custom mouthguard. You may try picking one up from your local convenience store, but those options usually don’t fit properly and can worsen your bite over time. When you get a custom-fit mouthguard
When people first experience the adverse effects of sleep apnea, their go-to treatment is a CPAP machine. While these machines can be incredibly effective, they’re also noisy, disruptive, and often

uncomfortable to the user and whomever they share a bed with.
This leads many people to seek out more convenient options. Thankfully, orthodontic treatment can be a huge help in this area.
Sleep apnea does not have to wreak havoc on your life. There are options available that can provide relief!

WHY DR. ALBORZI THINKS YOU’RE A PERFECT CANDIDATE Invisalign for All!
One of the most common questions we receive at our office is “Can Invisalign do the same job as braces?” This question arises when a patient has visited another orthodontist who tells them they are not a good candidate for Invisalign and would have a much more efficient and better treatment experience by going the braces route. However, Dr. Alborzi firmly believes 99% of patients who come to our office are perfect candidates for Invisalign. Any tool is dependent on the user. If the user has ample experience, training, and knowledge, they can use the tool much more efficiently. An amateur craftsman may blame their tools when they cannot complete a project on time or when the finished product looks much worse than initially imagined. An expert craftsman will stand by their work, knowing they have the experience to complete the project precisely as envisioned. Invisalign is no different. Because of Dr. Alborzi’s experience, training, and knowledge, she can help 99% of patients with Invisalign treatment, even if another office has already told them they are a poor candidate.
So, what’s the difference between getting Invisalign versus
traditional braces? It all comes down to the idea of fixed versus removable appliances. When you get traditional braces, they don’t come off until the treatment is completed. With Invisalign aligners, you can remove them whenever you have to eat or brush your teeth. That said, you’ll still be in your Invisalign aligners for 20–22 hours daily. If you’re wondering about the 1% of cases where Invisalign isn’t the best option, most of these situations involve a lot of root movement. Invisalign aligners aren’t entirely useless in these cases, but treatment will take much longer than traditional braces. However, if the patient is dead set on getting aligners, we can usually find a way to combine braces and Invisalign in their treatment plan.
If you have any questions about Invisalign or starting orthodontic treatment, please call our office today!
