BRAKE SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING

PROBLEM: Excessive Brake Fade. CAUSE: Excessive heat buildup in the drum and lining. RECOMMENDED ACTION:

• Check the air pressure delivery system to make sure that it is in balance. • Make sure that the brakes are functioning correctly and are adjusted properly. • Check the drum for heat spots, out-of-roundness, or a polished braking surface. • Check the inside diameter of the braking surface to see if it is worn or machined past the limits of travel of the brake lining.

PROBLEM: Brakes Pull. POSSIBLE CAUSES: • Mismatched brake components. • Oil or grease on the braking surface. • Improper functioning in the foundational brake system. • Defective or damaged drum.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: • Make sure that all components are functioning in the same manner at each location. • Make sure the drums have the same braking surface diameter. • Do not mix and match brake linings. • Check for foreign matter in the brake system. • Make sure that the individual brake systems are doing their share of the braking duties. The linings must contact the drums with equal force. PROBLEM: Brakes are noisy. POSSIBLE CAUSES: • Polished Drums. • Worn or damaged components in the foundational brake system. • Foreign matter on the lining or drum. • Glazed Lining. • Incorrect contact between the lining and drum. • High friction lining. • Stretched brake shoes. RECOMMENDED ACTION: • Pull the drum from the brake system. Check for the cause of the problem and repair/replace as necessary.
