KEY SCHOOL DATES

After last week’s release of our first Summer edition magazine, this is the first parental bulletin of the half term. If you haven’t already, be sure to read it by clicking here. Just before the half term break, two trips went out. The Year 10 German students had an amazing time in Boppard and really enjoyed soaking up the culture, whilst our

Year 8 students had such fun in Osmington Bay. Additionally, our first Bronze Duke of Edinburgh practice expeditions took place over the weekend in the Surrey Hills. You will be able to read more about these trips in our final magazine at the end of term. It has been an incredibly busy couple of weeks since our return. Last week we particularly enjoyed welcoming our Year 7 families into school. Year 7 students loved having the opportunity to show off the school, I do hope that this brought their tales of school to life. Our Year 10 Geographers completed their field work studies in Teddington in preparation for their coursework. Our Year 12 Sociologists visited the Central Criminal Court, better known as the Old Bailey, as an introduction to their course on Crime and Deviance. We also welcomed public speaking coaches into school to work with students in Year 9 and 10 who devised speeches inspired by their trip to Kensington Palace before half term. It was fantastic to hear the different issues the students identified. Please note that we are holding a preloved uniform sale on Saturday 22 June, this will be an opportunity to stock up on uniform for the year ahead whilst also supporting the school to raise vital funds. Please donate any unwanted items to school via reception or the Key Stage Hubs.

The Art of Brilliance are leaders in the field of positive psychology. Recently, they shared some thought-provoking information about how emotions are contagious and how far that contagion spreads. The science of positive psychology reports that a happy friend makes us 25% happier, a happy sibling raises our happiness by 14% and a happy neighbour raises our happiness by an impressive 34%. This is because emotions have a ‘hyper-dyadic spread’ – they pass from person to person, beyond an individual’s direct social ties. However, positivity is a learned behaviour and, unfortunately, the ripple effect also works with negativity. Supporting our children to be more optimistic and modelling positivity can be powerful vectors for creating far-reaching positive change. More of the Art of Brilliance’s insights can be found in their light-hearted and accessible blog here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

Having been back in school for two weeks, we are well and truly into the swing of things. The students have been up to a number of events worth celebrating. Last week, Ms. Moore delivered an insightful assembly on Pride Month. She explained the origins of LGBTQ+ Pride and why it is a significant date on the calendar. The presentation was enlightening, and our students took valuable lessons from it. This week, we had the privilege of watching the candidates for the 2024-2025 Head Girl position make their speeches. I hope that all Year 8s participated in voting for the candidates they believe will best represent them next year. The speeches made by the Year 10s were thoughtful and persuasive, demonstrating the skills they have honed in their English classes. I’m sure some of our Year 8s can envision themselves making those speeches in the future. A big congratulations to the students who participated in the ultimate frisbee match this week. It was wonderful to see students engaging in a new sport, and Mr. Reynolds was very proud of their effort. Over the last two weeks, we have also had matches for rounders, rugby, and cricket. Well done to everyone who has participated in these sports. It is always fantastic to hear about students involving themselves in school activities beyond the classroom. Recently, I have also seen students partaking in a range of new PE activities as they prepare for Sports Day. It is great to see them trying out various skills in their PE lessons. I should also mention the students who took part in the Osmington Bay Maths trip. Mr. Adair was very impressed with their behaviour, and I was pleased to hear from the students that they really enjoyed the trip. The trip offered a variety of activities, and I know the experience will be memorable for many. Looking forward to next week, we have an exciting presentation scheduled. On Tuesday, a guest speaker will talk to the Year 8s about engineering. Additionally, form time throughout the week will be dedicated to discussing women in engineering. We aim to dispel stereotypes and inspire students to consider it as a viable career option in the future.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Murder Most Unladylike by Robin Stevens Murder Most Unladylike is about two girls - Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong - who attend Deepdean School for girls and create their own detective agency. They haven’t had any real crimes to solve, but suddenly Hazel finds their teacher, Miss Bell, dead. However when they return the body has disappeared. It’s up to them to solve this case and prove that it actually happened. If you have read books like A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder or Murder Mysteries, then you will enjoy reading this because it is thrilling and also slightly gory. Personally, I really like this book because it is very gripping and gets your brain thinking about who the murderer is. ~ Recommended by Ameera F-H, 7PUN
