The Sports Ledger www.TheSportsLedger.com Sideline Sports ETOWAH COUNTY CHAMPS - The Sardis baseball team won the 2024 Etowah County Tournament. It is the third straight season that the Lions have won the county title. Sardis opened the tournament with a 17-0 victory over Gaston. The Lions earned an 11-1 win over Hokes Bluff in the next round, before closing out the tournament with a 20-0 championship victory over Glencoe. Landon Carroll was named the tournament's MVP. Sardis Teammates Conner Lowery, Carson Gillilan and Blaze Gerhart were all named to the County All-tournament team. 2024 AHSAA KICKOFF CLASSIC - The 19th annual AHSAA Kickoff Classic is set to get underway on Thursday, August 22 at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl at 7 p.m. Reeltown, the 2023 Class 2A state runner-up, and Class 3A T.R. Miller are set to face off in the season opening match-up. Vestavia Hills and Carver-Montgomery will play at 7 p.m., on Friday, August 23 in the second game of the annual classic. Both games will be at 7 p.m. and will be televised over the AHSAA TV Network. SPRING JAMBOREE - The Geraldine Bulldogs will host Anniston in a Spring football game on May 17. ALABAMA SPORTS HALL OF FAME - Former Alabama gymnastics standout Penney Hauschild Buxton is among those selected for induction into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024. She was the first Southeastern Conference gymnast to win an NCAA title. Overall, she won four under the legendary guidance of Sarah and David Patterson, including back-to-back NCAA All-Around championships (1985, 1986). The Class of 2024 will be inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame on May 4, 2024. The 56th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony will be held in the Birmingham Ballroom at the Sheraton Birmingham. The annual A-Day Game is the 15th and final practice of the spring and takes place at Bryant-Denny Stadium. More information on A-Day, including additional activities, traffic and parking will be posted on rolltide.com when it becomes available. Alabama has also revealed that the 2024 Homecoming Game will be played on Saturday, October 26, against Missouri. TENNESSEE FOOTBALL - Tennessee football will culminate its Spring with the 2024 Orange & White Game at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 13 in Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. JSU TO HOST BAMA SOFTBALL - Jacksonville State and the University of Alabama have set a new date for the postponed softball contest that was originally rained out on Feb. 28. The Gamecocks and Crimson Tide will face off at Jana McGinnis Field on April 2 at 6 p.m. Admission is free to all home Jax State softball games this season. JSU MEN FINISH SEASON - Jacksonville State stalled down the stretch allowing FIU to steal a 76-67 win and eliminate the Gamecocks from the 2024 Conference USA Men's Basketball Tournament. Jax State finished the 2024 season with a 14-18 overall record. Read more online at www.thesportsledger.com ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM - Conference USA has named six student-athletes to its 2024 CUSA Women’s Bowling All-Academic Team. Jacksonville State had two student athletes make the list. Athletes from Vanderbilt, Youngstown State, and Louisiana Tech also earned scholastic recognition. Jax State’s Maranda Pattison and Rebecca Hagerman are both graduate students working towards their masters in Integrated Studies and both have impressive 4.0 GPAs this academic school year. Hagerman is a two-time GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year and two-time recipient of the NCAA’s Elite 90 Academic Recognition Award. Vanderbilt is represented by Victoria Varano who has a 3.82 GPA and is studying Human & Organizational Development. Youngstown State’s Madyson Marx and Kirsten Moore also earned CUSA All-Academic honors. Marx is a Criminal Justice major and holds a 3.94 GPA. Moore holds a perfect 4.0 GPA as she earns her masters in English. She is a five-time member of the President’s List and Dean’s List. Representing LA Tech is Allie Leindecker.

The Alabama All-Star girls’ basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter for a 65-59 come-from-behind victory over Mississippi. The victory extended Alabama’s winning streak in the series to seven in a row and improved the overall record to 20-14. Alabama and Mississippi battled toe-to-toe in the first half with Hazel Green’s Leah Brooks calming down the hosts with nine rebounds and limiting Mississippi to just one shot most of the time while on the court. Brooks also scored six points and had two assists in the first-half. Teammate and Hewitt-Trussville point guard Jordan Hunter and Syriah Daniels of Auburn led Alabama’s attacking offense. Hunter had eight points and Daniels scored seven points to help give Alabama a 32-29 advantage at intermission. Mississippi came out strong in third quarter and took a 52-45 lead. The program extended the lead to 57-45 by scoring the first five points of the fourth quarter. However, the remainder of the fourth belonged to Alabama. The visitors cut the lead to 59-56 and Good Hope guard Ivey Maddox tied the game at 59-59 with 3:04 to play on a clutch 3-pointer. She followed with a deflected pass. Brooks recovered the ball and Hunter sank a short jumper at the 1:02 mark to give Alabama the lead. Maddox came up with another defensive gem with 43.7 seconds remaining. Hunter got the rebound and was fouled on the play. She calmly sank both free throws to extend Alabama’s lead to 63-59. Hunter, an Auburn signee, sank two more free throws to help the Alabama All-Stars seal the win. Hunter finished the game with a team-high 25 points, sinking 9-of-16 shots from the field and 6-of-8 at the foul line, to earn Alabama MVP honors. Brooks had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Maddox scored 15 points with 12 of those coming on four 3-point goals. Daniels had eight points and three steals in the win. Alabama Girls Win All-Star Game The Mississippi All-Star boys basketball team snapped a two-game Alabama winning streak with a 78-77 win in the 2024 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic. Mississippi got two clutch 3-pointers from Matthew Krass to erase a seven-point Alabama lead. Mississippi MVP Dorian McMillian of Pascagoula High School scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half and had some clutch play inside to help seal the victory. With the loss, Alabama’s boys hold an 18-16 lead in the series which was first played in 1991. The Alabama boys’ team trailed most of the first half but rallied late thanks to some clutch play by Austin’s Jordan Johnson to go in at halftime tied 41-41. Johnson scored six of eight points in the final three minutes before intermission. Huntsville’s Caleb Harrison had only one point in the first half. However he had a great second half, scoring 17 points in the final 20 points to finish with 18 points and MVP honors for Alabama. Harrison also had eight rebounds, all on the defensive boards. The Alabama All-star team was coached by former Albertville and current Buckhorn leader Patrick Harding, as well as Valley’s Marshon Harper. Adrian Wooley of Paul Bryant had 15 points and four assists for Alabama. Jordan Johnson had 10 points, McAdory's Tristan Gilmore finished with nine points and Ty Davis of Mountain Brook had eight points and five assists.
