34. 1957 Topps Basketball Complete Set (80)

Exceptional, midgrade example of one of the most important of all basketball card issues, the 1957-58 Topps set. The cards are largely all clean and presentable, a strong collection of cards representing one of the hobby’s great postwar vintage sets. The issue’s key, the rookie card of Hall of Fame Bill Russell, is a sharp and reasonably well- centered PSA 4, with just a tad of surface wear. The Russell rookie is one of the basketball hobby’s most highly-coveted cards, easily one of the most important in vintage basketball collecting. The balance of the set breaks down as approximately 5% EX-MT, 23% EX, 35% VG-EX, 29% VG, 5% GOOD, and a few lesser. The primary condition issue with this collection, as is typically the case with 1957 Topps basketball, relates to centering, as well-centered examples of the cards are just very difficult to find. Key cards grade as follows: #1 Clifton (PSA VG-EX 4), #2 Yardley (VG-EX), #3 Johnston (GOOD), #5 Sharman (VG), #10 Arizin (VG), #13 Schayes (VG), #16 McGuire (PSA EX 5), #17 Cousy (PSA NM-MT 8 OC), #19 Heinsohn (VG-EX), #24 Pettit (EX), #27 Macauley (EX), #28 Mikkelsen (VG), #33 Costello (VG), #37 Hagan (VG-EX), #44 Gola (VG-EX), #62 Gallatin (PSA EX 5), #71 Twyman (PSA EX 5), #75 Phillip (PSA EX-MT 6), #77 Russell (PSA VG-EX 4), and 80 Schnittker (PSA EX 5). A fine grouping of cards, a pleasing example of one of the most important of all basketball sets, a perfect candidate to acquire and let rest, or a springboard to slowly building a higher-grade set. 80 cards total.
