A CURATED SELECTION OF GREAT CARDS
47. 1909-13 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements Cy Young & Lou Criger (HOF) - PSA PR 1
48. 1909 E90-1 American Caramel Tris Speaker (HOF) - PSA VG 3
Strong, well-centered example of a tougher and more desirable card of Hall of Fame outfielder Tris Speaker. A key card from “The Kraken,” the most popular and widely- collected of all caramel issues, a set with cards that carry varying plateaus of rarity due in part to their years of issue. The card of Speaker is considered to be one of the issue’s nine or ten most rare and highly prized. PSA population
Scarce and interesting, the premiums were issued along with copies of the Sporting News between 1909 and 1913, each only distributed on one single day, the date of issue printed in a text box on the supplement. These are extremely condition-sensitive, printed on lightweight paper and subject to size-related wear, tears, pinholes, tape and trimming. One of the keys to the M101-2 Sporting News supplements issue, this classic image taken by famed photographer Louis Van Oeyen features the top
reports would support this, with just 30 examples graded and only three higher than this VG 3 example. For their part, SGC has graded just six (with two higher). The card boasts a clear, colorful image, with corner rounding responsible for the technical grade. The reverse is clean. A very strong example of one of the issue’s most important cards.
players in the American and National Leagues shaking hands before squaring off in the 1909 World Series. The Pirates would, famously, emerge victorious, taking the Series in 7 games, with Wagner batting .333 with 6 RBI. This example does exhibit wear, notably at the top and bottom edges with a couple of pronounced edge tears, and on the back with some light staining. PSA has only ever graded three examples of the Cobb/Wagner higher than this, which achieved a grade of PSA 1. Despite the wear apparent on this condition-sensitive piece, the image itself is attractive and clean, a noteworthy photo and one of the most important supplements in the entire four-year span of this issue.

49. 1908-09 Hall’s Studio Cabinets Rube Marquard (HOF RC) - PSA EX 5
Stunning example from a series of cabinet photos featuring members of the 1908 New York Giants as photographed by the Hall’s Studio of New York. Each member of the team is photographed without their caps, wearing a white shirt buttoned to the collar. The photography is stunning, each image carefully lit and edited so each subject is at their best. This example features Hall of Famer Rube Marquard, practically a baby in this image at just 21 years old. Less than a year removed from being told by his father he was not welcome to return home if he was to become a ballplayer, he was auctioned by the Indianapolis Indians and purchased by the New York Giants for the princely sum of $11,000. Marquard’s career had a rocky beginning, but he ultimately blossomed, winning 23 or more games in three consecutive seasons for the Giants. At the end of his 18-year major league career, Marquard posted a 201-177 lifetime record with a 3.08 ERA - enough to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971. The Old Cardboard database counts this as a Marquard rookie cards. An extremely difficult cabinet issue, PSA has graded just six examples - all of which were submitted by Love of the Game over the past few months. This is the highest-graded of the six, the only example of Marquard’s
cabinet to be evaluated by PSA. It is simply stunning, the photo in wonderful condition with virtually no wear. The mount exhibits some minor wear at the corners and edges, more visible on the reverse, where some mild surface wear is also evident. Regardless, a wonderful piece, an extremely rare rookie card of Hall of Famer Rube Marquard.
