FINANCIAL WELLNESS FOR THE FUTURE PLANNING AHEAD Estate Planning | Probate | Guardianships for Your Life Chapters
How to Plan, Save, and Protect Your Wealth
A typical inquiry I receive is that a spouse has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s: “I can’t afford to have someone take care of her and of course Medicare does not cover any long-term care. What can I do?” There are a few strategies once you are in crisis mode. But it is so much better if you plan ahead. January is Financial Wellness Month so it a good time to examine your finances and determine what you can do to secure your future. Here are six financial tips to improve your financial wellness and put you on the path to success. Update your financial goals. How much money do you need to retire comfortably? How much do you set aside for long-term care? The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to update your goals related to your savings, investments, retirement, and long-term care. Determine what you want from life and develop goals that align with your wishes. Manage your budget. At the beginning of the year, take some time to map out your expenses and compare them to your income. When creating and setting your budget, include your mortgage or rent, costs associated with your vehicles, utilities, monthly subscriptions, groceries, and other regular expenses. Plan for health care expenses. You’ll also want to account for the possibility of an emergency and set aside money for long-term care or other health care expenses, if you can. If you have not yet retired, you should consider this cost and make plans for it. For some, it might mean delaying retirement or working part-time. For others, it might mean looking at insurance options or reallocating investments.
Pay down debt when possible. If you can pay extra toward your debt or mortgage, add that to your budget and get your debt paid down. Avoid scams that target seniors. There are many scams that target seniors, especially those living alone or with early cognitive decline. Ideally, have a loved one regularly call or visit. THE HAPPINESS HACK Why Small Plans Can Make a Big Difference
When life feels overwhelming, or you just aren’t feeling your best, it can be difficult to find hope or joy. Sometimes, the best medicine is a little self-care in the form of simple activities and treats that you enjoy
most. One of the best ways to boost your mood is by planning something to look forward to. Whether it’s a favorite movie, a new painting class, or a tasty latte, prioritizing things that bring us happiness can empower us with hope. It’s like adding a bright spot in the future, making the tough days more manageable. What do you love? Your plan doesn’t have to be grand or complicated. Start by identifying activities that make you happy or that interest you. Do you love comedy movies or enjoy going to concerts? You might sign up for an improv class or buy tickets to see a
play. It can be anything that brings a smile to your face. Plan it. Once you know the activity, start planning. Our busy lives sometimes lack time for the little things that make us feel good. Treat your happiness like a necessary appointment and get it on your calendar. Spending time with your loved ones and friends also has a wealth of benefits for your mental health, so decide whether you want someone to join you. By planning to do things that bring you joy, you’ll feel more hopeful, balanced, and better equipped to handle whatever life throws your way.
Start the Year Right YOUR BEGINNING OF THE YEAR ESTATE PLANNING CHECKLIST
When the new year begins, many Americans look forward as they create their New Year’s resolutions. This is a time-honored tradition many participate in as they hope to improve a specific aspect of their lives. However, the beginning of a new year is also a great time to inspect your estate plan and ensure it still reflects your wishes for the future. Here, you’ll find a checklist for reviewing your estate plan. If you need to make any changes or simply want to ensure all your bases are covered, you can always call us for assistance! • Review and update your will or trust documents to ensure they still align with your wishes. Make sure your assets are titled into the
trust or have proper beneficiary designations. You don’t want your family to have to deal with probate when you’re gone. • Name or verify your power of attorney for health care and assets, plus a backup. This is who will make financial and healthcare decisions on your behalf if you become incapacitated and can’t make them yourself. Choose someone trustworthy. • Review your beneficiaries on your financial accounts and insurance policies to ensure you have the right people in place and that they are still alive. We handle probates where the named beneficiary died
first, and the designation was not updated. • Determine if your long-term care plan is still the best course of action for your personal desires. • Start planning for any impending life changes. Are you or your spouse facing an illness? Are you going through a divorce? Major life changes require updates to our estate plans. It’s better to start looking at your options and putting together your plan now instead of waiting until the life change is official. • Review your burial and funeral plans to ensure they still align with what you want. • Call us if you need assistance, guidance, or anything else!

SUGAR SMARTS Essential Steps to Balance Blood Sugar as You Age
TAKE A BREAK
People tend to pay more attention to their overall health and fitness as they age. If you ignore your aches, pains, and injuries, they’re more likely to worsen, which is why so many of us go out of our way to track specific health measurements. One measurement you should track, especially if you’re showing symptoms of prediabetes, is your blood sugar. Maintaining low blood sugar helps prevent cognitive decline, kidney disease, nerve damage, and more. However, many don’t know how to lower their blood sugar if it’s starting to reach dangerous levels. Here are two lifestyle changes that can help keep blood sugar low while improving other aspects of your health. Exercise regularly. Exercise becomes increasingly important as we age, but this doesn’t mean you have to go all out every time you strap on your running shoes or go to the gym. Experts recommend that you get around 150 minutes of exercise every week, and it doesn’t have to be any more strenuous than a brisk walk. You’ll see much better results if you pick a routine that’s easy to maintain and follow. Cut back on ultra-processed foods. When people try to keep their blood sugar balanced, they usually make an added effort to reduce their intake of sweets. However, nearly all processed carbs pose a risk. Even eating things like bread, pasta, noodles, and white rice can raise sugar levels. Pay attention to what you eat, and your body will thank you.

CODY’S CORNER WHEN WILL THE SNOW ARRIVE?
As the weather gets colder and winter continues, our chances of seeing snow get better and better! I have yet to see snow, so I am eagerly anticipating some snowfall this winter! I know we’ve entered the snowy time of year because Ella keeps asking, “When is it going to snow?” I think she’s just as eager as I am to see snow! The family often drives to Mount Charleston to see the snowcapped mountains up close! One year, my family went to see the snow at Mount Charleston, and Ella slipped on the ice. She fell right on her bottom! They still talk about it to this day. And if it does snow, let your furry friends frolic in the snow alongside you. It’s a great experience for us, and we’ll definitely appreciate it!
