W hat Curse?

by Steve Meiners If you are a Cubs Fan this was your year. What a ride. World Series Champions! I still can’t believe I get to say this out loud about the Cubs! Finally those of us who Bleed Cubbie Blue got to experience what you Cardinal and Sox fans have enjoyed for years. Winning is sooooo swwwweeeet! I know this is just baseball…a kid’s game, right? Certainly there are more important things in our lives. But few deliver the high like being a fan of a championship team. I, for one, am hoping this can become a long standing tra- dition on the North Side. A run as long as our history of being lovable losers? Think about it…108 years of win- ning! Can’t wait until next year. All the excitement of the season is behind us. Wrigley Field is covered with snow and the last of the ivy leaves have blown away. Chapman is gone. Fowler too. Ticket prices are up about 20%. The business of baseball goes on. But the memory of this season will not soon fade. This was an awesome experience. Never have I felt a part of something quite so emotional. Trust me…some grown men and women were tearing up in the stands the day we clinched to go to the Series. I might have gotten a little misty-eyed myself after Bryant threw a strike to Rizzo to end Game Seven. Steve Goodman (Chicago song writer…Go Cubs Go and such) asks this question in his ‘A Dying Cub Fan’s Last Request’: “Do they still play the blues in Chicago..When baseball season rolls around?..When the snow melts away, do the Cubbies still play..In their ivy-covered burial ground?” We do, Steve. W!
