More Man-made Glory Time magazine has noted that two of the three dogmas defined by the Roman Catholic Church since the Council of Trent (1545-63) have con cerned the Virgin Mary: her Immac ulate Conception (1854) and her As sumption into heaven (1950). Recent ly the Very Rev. John A. Flynn, presi dent of Catholic St. John’s University in Brooklyn, told a Marian Year con vocation that the Virgin might be due for still further doctrinal recog nition within the next 100 years or so. It is “not unlikely,” he said, that Mary will be “proclaimed in a defin- M in iste r Un frocked A Presbyterian church commission has unfrocked and labeled as a her etic a minister who was named by a congressional committee as “ a sus pected Communist.” In the first such heresy trial in more than a genera tion, the Rev. Claude Williams, di rector of the “ Peoples Institute of Applied Religion,” was read out of the Presbytery by a judicial commis sion. The Rev. Mr. Williams was one of six protestant ministers named by Representative Harold H. Velde, Re publican of Illinois, as a suspected Communist infiltrating the American ministry. His convictipn revolved principally around his “ concept of Christ.” “ Our church holds that Jesus is the Lord,” said Rev. Henry J. Walch, who headed the trial commis sion, “Mr. Williams feels he was just another good man on earth.” The Rev. Mr. Walch said “ the defrocked minister,” in his 350-page defense, “ never had referred to Jesus as the Lord Jesus Christ, but always as the son of man.” M ile C ra ter Dug b y H yd rog en B last “ Mankind is in the act of stepping across the threshold of an age in which one plane, carrying one hydro gen bomb, can unleash on a target a cargo of destructive force exceeding all the TNT dropped on Germany, Italy and Japan combined throughout all of World War II.” So said Repre-

ition of doctrine as Co-Redemptrix of the human race, that next the dogma of Mediatrix, of all graces may be promulgated, and that finally the defi nition of her queenship, as participa tion with her Son in the power of ruling the World, may be pro claimed.” Theologians agree, Father Flynn added, “ that these are definable. It is likely that all three of these may come to realization before another century passes because the importance of Mary in the universe has come more and more to the fore.” sentative W. Sterling Cole, Republi can of New York, chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy recently. Mr. Cole said that during the 1952 tests in the Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific Ocean a hydrogen device had “ completely obliterated” the test island. He added: “ It tore a cavity in the floor of the ocean — a crater — measuring a full mile in diameter and 175 feet in depth at its lowest point.” It is esti mated that if the bomb were dropped on a modern city, the blast and heat generated, would cause absolute de struction over an area extending three miles in all directions from the point of explosion. Severe to moderate dam age would extend in all directions to seven miles from ground zero. W arn ing to Sm ok ers Is there any relation between lung cancer and smoking? A nod in the affirmative was recently given to Brit ons in the presentation of a report given to the House of Commons by Minister of Health, Ian Macleod. Macleod pointed out that while there are as yet no reliable quantitative estimates of tobacco-caused cancer, his committee advised a warning be voiced. Said his report: “ It would ap pear that the risk increases with the amount smoked, particularly of cig arettes,” and Macleod added, “ tobac co companies in Britain have offered 700 thousand dollars toward research

into the problem. I accept the com mittee’s view that the statistical evi dence points to smoking as a factor in lung cancer.” Short Uife-Span fo r Nava jos In a report to Congress recently Dr. James R. Shaw of the Interior Department’s Bureau of Indian Af fairs, claimed the average life-span of Navajo Indians was given as “ less than twenty years,” as compared to a life-span of an average 68 years in the white population according to sta tistics recently compiled by the Unit ed States Public Health Service. Ac cording to Dr. Shaw’s report, “ Deaths from tuberculosis among Navajos in 1952 ran to 9.3 times the rate for whites; those from dysentery, 13 times; from measles, 2,915 times, and from gastroenteritis, 25 times. A lot of the blame was placed upon “ the Government policy of apparently con centrating more on hospitalization than upon prevention of disease, es pecially tuberculosis.” Dr. Shaw said, “ I am sorry to report, we do not have a health-education program.” Repre sentative Michaek J. Kerwan, Demo crat for Ohio interjected what should be the sentiment of every American when he said, “This is something America should be ashamed of.” Investiga tion o f Gang W a r s Gang w a rfa r e between organized mobs of teenagers is a prime item on the agenda of the Senate judiciary subcommittee’s nation-wide in q u ir y into juvenile delinquency. Chairman Hendrickson, Republican of New Jer sey, said in an interview, “We hope to have task forces of local leaders aid us in all large cities where there are juvenile delinquency problems.” He said such units would include po lice, clergymen, welfare workers and school and juvenile court officials in each city or area. Hendrickson said that “ the open warfare between or ganized gangs of youngsters in larger cities has often been linked with drug addiction, robberies and other crimes.”
