IN HONOR OF TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK THE EDUCATORS WHO IMPACTED ME THE MOST

Teachers play a vital role in students’ lives. In many cases, great teachers can make a difference in a child’s experience at school and, ultimately, in their decisions and actions as an adult. Being a teacher involves so much more than most people imagine — more than lesson plans, whiteboards, and grades scribbled in red pen across the tops of essays and tests. Educators are often held responsible for shaping students’ thought processes, motivation to set and complete goals, and overall perception of humanity. With Teacher Appreciation Week coming up, I figured that I would set aside some time to acknowledge a few of the instructors who made a substantial difference in my life as a student and dentist. I come from a family of teachers: My mom has been an orchestra teacher for the last 30 years (I was a student in her class from ages 9–17), my grandpa was a college biology professor, and my uncle teaches high school Spanish. While each of them teaches vastly different subjects, they’ve all demonstrated the magic that happens when an instructor believes in his/her students’ abilities and offers unwavering support — characteristics I strive to incorporate in my own practice. Knowing me now, you likely wouldn’t guess that I struggled in biology all through high school. In fact, most of my high school science teachers had taken their own college-level biology classes from my grandpa, so they

were particularly baffled when his scientific faculties didn’t seem to run in the family. I struggled through my high school and early college classes, and honestly, I didn’t like them a bit. Then, something just clicked. In the end, I even earned my master’s degree in biology. When I graduated with my doctorate in dentistry, my 83-year-old grandpa was the one who hooded me.

I’ve found this lesson to be true. The best instructors weren’t the ones who treated me well because I aced a test; they were the ones who treated me well because they cared about me as an individual. This is a lesson I brought with me when I started my own practice. It’s no secret that a big portion of the population harbors a fear of going to the dentist. I’ve met many patients who told me the minute they sat down in the chair that they were terrified. To me, in this industry, the biggest fear is the fear of the unknown, and that is why I make it my goal to constantly bring patients into the process. I explain the procedure, how to prepare for it, and how long it might take. Additionally, my entire team tells them how to prevent cavities and decay. Making each visit an educational experience has significantly reduced patient anxiety. We strive to also make our patients feel like individuals we care about rather than just numbers. All of this combined seems to make for a more peaceful and comfortable dental experience, and for that, I have to thank all my teachers who made such a positive impact on my life and the way I approach my job. All of your hard work didn’t go unnoticed. Thank you for your support and encouragement!

“The best instructors weren’t the ones who

Alongside my grandpa, who always assured me that I was smart enough to conquer my school challenges, my uncle (with whom I lived for a year and a half) also showed me the importance of breaking down barriers to foster growth in a student’s education. He always said that the best way to reach people is to get to know them first. In my own experience, treated me well because I aced a test; they were the ones who treated me well because they cared about me as an individual.”

WHY SPRING IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR US TO ASK YOU FOR ADVICE REVIEWS, REFERRALS, AND GROWTH

WORLDS WITHIN PAGES BOOKS TO ENGAGE THE WHOLE FAMILY Learning to read opens up a world of possibilities. When your child walks through the back of the wardrobe into Narnia with Lucy Pevensie or rides with Harry Potter on the train to Hogwarts, they connect to something beyond their own experiences. In the U.S., April 23 is World Book Day, and the date commemorates the deaths of legendary authors Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as the birth of author Vladimir Nabokov. World Book Day is the perfect time to sit down with your family and let yourself be transported to new worlds. So, here are three great stories to help you take young readers on brand-new adventures.

FOR THE ELEMENTARY READER: ‘SONG OF THE WILD: A FIRST BOOK OF ANIMALS’

“Song of the Wild” makes a great read-aloud book for beginner readers because they can get lost in the beautiful artwork while you read the text. Written in prose and rhyming poems, this book showcases sprawling landscapes — savannahs, jungles, and oceans — and features the wildlife living there. It’s worth a read simply to appreciate the colorful depictions of each animal. This book was written by Nicola Davies and illustrated by Petr Horácek.

Ever since we first opened our doors, the team here at Anderson Dental Care has made it our mission to offer quality, education-based care to each and every patient. In order to keep this mission at the forefront of our practice, we know that we have to ask for both feedback and referrals. Since spring is the season of growth and renewal, we figured it would be the perfect time to ask our existing and prospective patients for advice about how we can take the best steps forward. As a practice, we are dependent on myriad factors to continue growing, but none are as vital as the good people we have the pleasure to serve. That’s why your reviews and referrals mean everything to us. Check out this one by Amanda C. “I have severe dental anxiety, but the entire staff was so reassuring and patient with me. Not once did I feel judged or uncomfortable. I walked in and immediately was greeted with smiles by very kind receptionists. The hygienist calmed my nerves, and Dr. Brooks was very kind, down-to-earth, and respectful. Thank you so much for making my experience easier for me!” Whether you leave us a review on Google, Facebook, or our website, or you encourage a friend, family member, or even a stranger in a grocery store to pay us a visit, we reap the benefits in two ways. First, your referral lets us know that we are satisfying your needs as a patient and that we should continue with our existing processes and methods. Second, your referral gives us the opportunity to work with a new person. Every patient is different and provides us with the ability to learn. If we stop learning, we stagnate as a practice and eventually plateau. The more patients we receive, the more chances we have to learn from challenges and solve complex problems. In the end, your help and feedback ultimately equate to our growth. Is there a better way for our practice to start this spring? We don’t think so!

FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOLER: ‘THE NIGHT DIARY’

12-year-old Nisha navigates her world after the partition of India creates the new country of Pakistan and her family is forced to leave their home. Her mother may be gone, but Nisha finds solace in writing nightly letters to her in her diary as she discovers what the future holds. Based on author Veera Hiranandani’s memories of her own family, this moving tale lets readers experience life through someone else’s eyes.

FOR TEENS AND PARENTS: ‘THE JEFFERSON LIES’

In this New York Times best-seller, author David Barton sets out to “correct what [he] saw as the distorted image of a once-beloved Founding Father, Thomas Jefferson.” In a time when generations are beginning to forget our country’s noble roots and disregard our founding history, this book seeks to use Jefferson’s own words

through various sources and original documents to tell his

own story. It’s nonfiction and a little on the long side, but incredibly fascinating. It’s worth

considering listening to as an audio book.

SHHHHHHH! IT’S NATIONAL LIBRARY WORKERS DAY!

Whether you have a card or not, libraries are an important part of our community. They serve as meeting places, research stations, employment centers, and local historical archives. They help kids and adults alike explore vast literary worlds and immense databases of knowledge — all for free! Behind every library is a dedicated staff of librarians, catalogers, assistants, and administrators who keep the system running smoothly. While it may not be the most well-known holiday, April 9 is National Library Workers Day (NLWD). As part of National Library Week, NLWD recognizes and celebrates the vital work performed by library staff. Librarians and their team do far more than simply place books on the shelf and shush noisy teenagers, after all. Library science is a multidisciplinary field that takes years of study to master. Today’s librarians have the skills of managers, IT specialists,

documentarians, archivists, and educators — equipping them to help anyone from elementary students to doctoral researchers. These professionals can be an invaluable resource for anyone looking to delve into a particular topic, even if they don’t know where to begin. Just tell your local library worker what subject you’re interested in, and they can help you track down books, databases, magazine articles, and more. How should you celebrate National Library Workers Day? Some groups, such as the students at the University of Arizona, go above and beyond by delivering balloons and signs to library branches across Tucson. More commonly, however, library branches ask their community members to vote for a “star” staffer. If a library worker has made a difference in your life, you can submit their name to the American Library Association by visiting Ala-Apa.org and clicking “Submit A Star!” Lastly, you can show your appreciation by visiting your local library and thanking these professionals. These important community centers only work because they do!
