EXCELLENCE | THE FORMATIVE EXPERIENCE

In July 2026, alumna Lisa Laplace (right, IAC/NMC 73-79) shares her memories of Camp in the 1970s in an interview with Juwan Holley, Oral History Fellow (left, IAC St 26).

In the past century, more than 110,000 alumni from 110 countries have found their lives transformed under the stately pines. Of these, dozens have already shared their stories in Interlochen’s ongoing oral history project, part of our centennial celebration. “Interlochen has made me the man I am today,” recounts alumnus and former employee Bill Shuster (IAC/NMC 60-63, IAC/NMC St 77-79, 81-82, IAA St 81-82). “Interlochen is the arts,” he adds. “The arts are so important… It’s a means of survival and a means of finding joy and… giving us a path forward.” Bill’s wife Kitty (IAC/NMC St 77-79, 81, IAA St 81-82) agrees: art, she says, “helps us survive.” For them, Kitty says, every return visit to Interlochen is “like coming back home, like a pilgrimage.” A Century of Interlochen Stories

Claudia Polley (IAA 64-67) found myriad benefits at Interlochen, too; chief among them was to “learn to listen.” It was only natural, she explains, “because there was so much to listen to at Interlochen… (and it) made you a better performer if you paid attention.” That vital skill “carried me through not only in music, but in everything else I’ve done,” including her successful career as a broadcast journalist. “The best interviews I’ve ever done were because I listened... and Interlochen taught me that.” For these and many more stories and reflections, spanning generations of alumni from the 1940s through the 2020s, visit interlochen.org/ohp.
