A Planned Gift to Elevate a Scholarship’s Impact into Perpetuity

David R. Hoffman’s path to planned giving began, as it does for many Interlochen supporters, with his own time as a student (IAA 80-82). His experience studying theatre at Academy

David recently decided to elevate his scholarship commitment through a combination of outright giving to endowment and a planned gift in his estate. His planned gift is designated for multiple purposes. First, it will endow the scholarship he created in 2011, increasing its impact through more scholarship dollars for students. Second, the remainder of his estate allocation to Interlochen will be available as unrestricted funds, to be used in support of emerging technologies within a range of arts areas. Through this multifaceted approach to planned giving, David will have established a legacy of support for a wide variety of transformative artistic experiences at Interlochen—a legacy poised to endure for generations.

was formative upon David’s early life, and although he ultimately pursued a career in software engineering, his years under the stately pines stuck with him—and inspired him to give back. His first step was a major gift in 2011 to create the Design and Production Achievement Scholarship, an annual source of financial aid for returning Academy students whose theatre studies focus on set design and technical production. David’s subsequent gifts have provided more funding to keep the scholarship active and available for annual disbursement. But mindful of its long-term sustainability,

“Art and technology are inseparably intertwined; each gives shape, meaning, and possibility to the other. Lacking a close family of my own, I choose to support the greater human family through these gifts— celebrating the enduring symbiosis between human creativity and technological innovation.” — David R. Hoffman (IAA 80-82)
