BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND OFFICERS

Remembering Chuck Kelly, A Stalwart Friend of Interlochen

Through his visionary leadership as a trustee, Chuck’s impact on Interlochen was profound, not least because he lent his time to so many different projects. Among other leadership roles, he served as Chair of the IPR Committee and was an original member of the Planned Giving Committee, through which his work was essential to Interlochen launching its planned giving program in 1992. Chuck also carried with him poignant memories of an era when the leaders of Interlochen’s earliest days—including founder Dr. Joseph Maddy and T.P. Giddings—still trod its campus and taught its students. He shared many of those memories for our centennial oral history project (see p. 13); you can hear his full interview at interlochen.org/ohp. A frequent guest on our campus through 2026, it was clear that Chuck bore a deep love for Interlochen and an abundant friendliness for everyone in its community. Chuck’s “smiling face was always a welcome presence,” President Trey Devey reflected. It is with sadness, but also abiding gratitude, that we remember Chuck and honor his decades of kind service at Interlochen.

One of Interlochen’s most ardent champions passed away this year. Dr. Charles “Chuck” Kelly (AS 43-46) was 96. Over four summers at Camp—studying clarinet, which he would continue to play the rest of his life— Chuck began a history with Interlochen that endured more than 80 years. He served on our Board of Trustees from 1984 to 2004, and with his wife Dee, who died in 2025, Chuck was also a proud Camp parent and a decades-long donor, providing vital support for the construction of the Dow House and for the Waldemar & Mary Ellen Lungershausen Scholarship.
