BIM Technology

Digital Experience: Since 2009, Wright McGraw Beyer Architects has been fully engaged in and dedicated to the use of BIM throughout the design process, and became 100% Revit-based in 2012. Utilizing the latest versions of Autodesk Revit, WMBA has integrated BIM into our daily workflow and it has become a natural part of our process. We incorporate animations, real-time walkthroughs with the client, equipment modeling and scheduling, and cost estimation into our design process. With the ability to make live changes during design review meetings, we are able to reduce lag time in making and approving design modifications. During construction, we employ BIM as a coordination tool by working with all engineering trades to run clash detection. We have worked both with and for contractors, with varying levels of involvement in BIM modeling. We have provided design assistance due to field conditions, as well as full sets of coordination drawings. WMBA strives to keep current with BIM technology and we often serve as a reference to consultants who need guidance with integrating those standards into their portion of the design. In addition to utilizing BIM in design and construction coordination, we are also able to assist with asset management, record modeling, and laser scanning. The combination of all of these elements creates a highly detailed, cohesive model that can be effectively used for Facilities Management.

Completion:

Phase I: 2/4/16; Phase II: 9/25/17; Phase III: 11/2018

The expansion and renovation of Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital (COH) began with an extensive Master Planning Process that analyzed several options. The options included relocating the entire facility to various locations adjacent to Presbyterian Medical Center (PMC) Campus and to the final solution to expand the building at its current location. Master Planning evaluated a wide variety of criteria including:

Patient access and circulation

  

Impact to Patient Care

Staff efficiency

 Impact to Hospital Operations to both COH and PMC  Delivery of Support Services  Redundancy of shared Hospital Operations  Constructability  Construction phasing  Project costs  Disruption to existing Hospital Operations  Curb side appeal  Patient parking

The current solution constructs a new major addition including a new main Hospital Entrance, Registration, Impact Clinic, Surgery Department, PACU, Prep-Recovery, SPD, and 40 Acute Care Patient Bedrooms. The multi-phased project began with the temporary relocation of the Hospital Main Entrance. Phase II constructed the main addition to the Hospital. Phase III will demolish the existing Bedtower and extend a Pedestrian Connector that links COH and PMC. The main addition was completed on September 25, 2017. The project is currently $500,000 under budget and has an additional $500,000 of unused contingency.

$2,993,000

Completion: May 2, 2017 With the opening of CHS Union’s Women Center addition, the original 6,573 square foot nursery and labor/ delivery unit in the acute care building was no longer occupied. The Level 2 Renovation converted the vacant Labor/Delivery unit into an Eleven-Bed acute care unit with four bariatric rooms. In the new rooms, the patient enjoys contemporary finishes and a wooden headwall. The exterior wall was opened up, and new windows were installed. This was done to fill the rooms with natural daylight and give the patients direct views to the outside. Each room has a family zone with a sleeper sofa and a staff zone that provides space at the bedside for charting and patient care. Enlarged roll-in Patient Toilet/Showers are in all Patient Rooms and allow for increased ability to assist the patients. The four Bariatric Rooms are designed with larger doors, higher ceilings, patient lifts, and Bariatric Patient toilets/showers to make patients and their families more comfortable during their stay. The Nurse Station was reoriented to give the staff a visual to the visitor elevator/entrances and Patient Rooms. Charting alcoves are located throughout the unit to allow for flexibility, to keep the Nurse Station from being congested, and to help staff stay close to their patients.

Completion: November 29, 2011 This new freestanding Ambulatory Surgery Center is located on a site adjacent to old Interstate I-40 in Winston-Salem, NC. The Program is based upon two Operating Rooms. The center is designed to provide one-way flow of all surgical patients from Reception through Discharge and includes a separate Surgery Discharge exit and drive-under canopy. The Pre/Post Procedure Bays were strategically designed to share support spaces, such as Clean Supply and Soiled Holding, to minimize redundancy of those spaces. Staff can efficiently flow between Pre-Procedure and Recovery Areas without ever crossing the flow of surgery patients. A dedicated staff entrance and parking area allow Physicians to enter the building without crossing public areas. There is also a separate set of double doors directly off the Sterile Core which can be used as needed when installing new equipment. Dual HVAC Systems were designed in order to provide two separate mechanical systems. The Business Area utilizes a standard pre- manufactured air handling unit with plenum return, while the Surgery Core is conditioned by a custom air handler with final filters and a ducted return. This approach saved thousands of dollars in the cost of the mechanical system.

CMC Mercy is a Plane Tree Facility, and the Renovation of the 7 th Floor - South Wing Orthopedics Patient Unit exemplifies these concepts in the design. This patient-centered renovation took an existing 35-bed unit and turned it into a spacious, 22-bed unit. The small patient rooms designed in the1970s were enlarged from 190 SF to approximately 300 SF. The new larger room size can accommodate a family zone with a writing/desk area, sleeper sofa, and private reading light. The patient enjoys raised ceilings, a wooden headwall/headboard, and direct views to the outside, while the staff has space at the bedside with direct eye contact on the patient for charting and ample room to maneuver around the bed. Enlarged roll- in Patient Toilet/Showers are in all patient rooms and allow for increased ability to assist the patients. The Nurse Station was reconfigured to give the Staff a front door presence when you walk onto the unit. Smaller, de-centralized Nurse Stations are located throughout the floor to allow flexibility of the Staff and increasing bedside time for Nurses. A separate Rehab and Physical Therapy Gym was also created on the unit to help with the healing of the Orthopedic patients. A large Care Partner Lounge supports the family members and provides a place out of the room while their loved one is resting. This concept keeps the family members close by in comfort, while still supporting patient sleep.

Renovations to the existing building provided a modernization of the non-emergent side. To improve efficiency and work flow around the decentralized Nurse Stations, hand washing stations and seat height work counters are located on clipped corners. Security cameras are monitored from the Nurse Station, allowing visibility of the Waiting Rooms, Ambulance Entry, and Seclusion Holding Area. Telemetry printers are recessed in a niche directly beside the Pyxis Alcove within reach of the work counter.

Completion: April 8, 2011 This new Ambulatory Surgery Center is an upfit of an existing single story retail shell building located off Highway-74 between Charlotte and Monroe, NC. The design features two Class-C Operating Rooms strategically located to allow easy expansion of a future Operating Room. One-way patient flow results in a highly efficient plan for both patients and staff. A separate discharge canopy was added to the building as part of this project. The Pre/Post Procedure Areas provide excellent direct visibility of all private Patient Bays from the Nurse Stations. Each bay is a universal room, creating Pre- Procedure Bays that can convert to Recovery Bays. Since the shell building was originally designed as a retail space, a structural analysis was performed of the roof system which added steel to support the dedicated air handling unit and the OR lights. The Waiting Room design provides a comfortable family environment and features a separate play area for children.

OrthoCarolina’s University Ambulatory Surgery Center is an 11,300 square foot renovation and 2,680 square foot addition to an existing Medical Office Building in the University Area of Charlotte, NC. The existing OrthoCarolina Clinic located on the First Floor and office support spaces on the Second Floor remained fully operational during the construction of this project, requiring carefully planned construction phasing. The Second Floor renovation constructed a fully independent ASC with one Procedure Room, two ORs, Decontamination/Sterilization spaces, and all supporting Pre/Post Procedure Areas. During the design phase, WMBA made it a priority to maintain the ability for future growth within the renovated space. A new elevator sized to transport stretcher patients and a Discharge Canopy were added to the building and designed to blend with the existing exterior aesthetics. WMBA also designed an emergency generator and screen enclosure located directly adjacent to the existing building.
