Love of the Game Topps 75th Anniversary Celebration

1956 TOPPS 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AUCTION

T he last year of Giant Size issues also marked the end of Solomon & Gelman’s outside work, but the duo simply moved in house and continued their design and mechanical production work. Topps had bought out Bowman early in the year and were able to increase the set to 340 subjects, once again using a horizontal design and Flexichrome images large and small. Player cards have spectacular backdrops that fill the entire frame, often showing truly thrilling plays. Team cards were introduced and two very plain, unnumbered checklists were “pushed” into the packs now that Topps could count on all their planned subjects being issued. For the second straight year, a second set was issued, this time it was Baseball Buttons. These small, attractive pins featured player head shots set against colorful backgrounds and are quite condition sensitive. A planned 90 subject release was truncated at 60, likely due to the expenses and time involved in purchasing Bowman.
