Love of the Game Topps 75th Anniversary Celebration

1957 TOPPS 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AUCTION

A fter reducing it with a couple of non-sports sets issued in 1955 and 1956, Topps changed card dimensions from the Giant Size to 2.5 x 3.5 inches, commonly referred to as “standard size” today. This also served to increase the number of cards on their press sheets to 264, with each halved to 132, a practice that continued for decades for anything released in this size. The reduction in card size brought an immediate increase in picture quality and if the 1952 set wasn’t considered their ultimate achievement, the 1957 release would have been. Flipping back to a vertical orientation, gorgeous color photos were used and with so many classic ballpark backdrops featured in so many of the card backgrounds, Topps once again created yet another classic set. For the second time in four years, Ted Williams was the first card in the set, and five series would be released, totaling 407 cards, with the fourth series being in shorter supply. Topps once again included team cards and “pushed” checklist cards into the packs, four this time, along with a series of contest cards and one with a Lucky Penny premium offer. What the set lacks in big name rookies, it makes up for with the checklists, which each cover two successive series and sequentially increase in difficulty. Two very popular multi-player cards, one featuring four “Dodgers Sluggers” and the other “Yankees Power Hitters” are found in the final series, the latter concluding the set and featuring Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle.
