Love of the Game Topps 75th Anniversary Celebration

TOPPS 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AUCTION 1958

T he move of the Dodgers and Giants franchises to California created some headaches for Topps and their 494-card release, reduced by one planned subject with Ed Bouchee famously pulled from release due to a pair of convictions for indecent exposure, was prepared in the wake of these relocations and shows it. Muddy solid color backgrounds and a multitude of airbrushed images resulted in a drab set that also featured checklists, both numerical and alphabetical, appearing on the back of the team cards in the first four series. For once there are no tough series for collectors to chase. Continuing a trend, Ted Williams again led things off, his last year with the company. Topps managed to finally sign Stan Musial midseason and celebrated his company debut by including a card of him, but only in the All-Star subset - another first - that concluded the final series. Musial’s All-Star card was overprinted, as was Mantle’s, which caused Topps to pull cards of common players from four slots to accommodate their superstars. This means both short prints and overprints exist in the same series, but the 55-card length allowed the company to smooth this process out somewhat. Multi-player cards became more prevalent and would become a recurring annual feature. An All-Star Game contest card and another with a felt emblems offer were “pushed” into some packs.
