variations found throughout the set, the “Herrer” card is a true printing anomaly that was discovered and corrected at some point in the press run. Precisely what caused the final “a” to fade and disappear has never been conclusively documented, though surviving examples demonstrate varying degrees of the defect, with some showing traces of the missing “A” and others displaying an essentially complete absence. One can, however, equate this error with many other “blackless” variations throughout Topps’ history, where some external factor disrupted the application of blank ink over part of the card (another well-known example of this is the 1990 Frank Thomas “no name on front” variation, featured elsewhere in this auction). The card is extremely scarce, with just 77 examples of the error graded by PSA and just nine higher than this example. Bold and well-centered, the card exhibits corner touches that likely would result in a lower grade if submitted under the exacting grading standards of today, yet the eye appeal remains very strong. The card, today, remains one of the most elusive and valuable Topps error cards of the postwar era, its stature particularly remarkable given its subject: Herrera was a young Phillies infielder rather than an established star, making the card’s desirability entirely a product of the printing variation and its scarcity. For the advanced Topps collector, the “Herrer” has become one of the defining challenges of a complete 1958 master set - a seemingly innocuous missing letter that transformed an otherwise ordinary high-number card into one of the decade’s most challenging collecting rarities.
