TOPPS 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AUCTION
1960
T opps returned to a horizontal look and issued 572 cards with a playful mix of colorful graphics and sharp photos for 1960. The set is known for variance in cardboard stock as each series was issued, alternating between cream and gray until the fifth series came out and used both along with some incredibly scarce white stock. Two series of gray backs concluded matters and a subset of cards depicting each team’s coaches was but one innovation. The Topps All-Star Rookies subset was another and brought the trading card debut of a miniature version of the actual trophy awarded to each of the ten players who had been announced as winners the previous fall; both the awards and the small trophy icons continue annually to this day. World Series recap cards also first appeared in this set. Also mixed in were the now traditional rookie subset in series two and another run of All-Star cards concluding the seventh series. The “pushed” inserts were once again made of paper, with a Hot Iron Transfer premium offer, a Baseball Card Album offer, and a reissued “Elect Your Favorite Rookie” ballot in the packs. The latter lacks the specific date and television program information found on back the year prior and is far more plentiful. A separate set of Baseball Tattoos marked the return of supplemental issues, as Fleer nipped at the company’s heels.
