Love of the Game Topps 75th Anniversary Celebration

TOPPS 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AUCTION

1962

A new season brought more expansion related headaches for Topps, but it was a production problem that really vexed them. The cards were designed with a brown wood-grain border that proved difficult to print and the legend has it they hurriedly subcontracted a press run of the second series to an additional lithographer when true disaster struck as production materials were damaged enroute. That may or may not be true, but the fact is all 88 cards in the series were recomposed and run off with a sickly green tint permeating them all, creating variations not only in appearance for all 88 but in the case of several cards, an entirely new look. This series includes the ten-card Babe Ruth Special subset which was greatly affected by printing woes. A nine-card subset that used a clever triptych of in-action style photos was a unique touch in the fourth series and a run of eight Rookie Parade cards capped this challenging 598 subject set, where all four borders had full bleeds of the wood grain graphics. The high numbers remained tough but less so than in 1961. Topps again inserted two-subject panels of photo stamps into select packs, brighter in appearance than 1961’s offering and still paired with a retail stamp album. For their secondary offering, 96 clever Baseball Bucks were sold in one and five cent packs with a black-and-white player portrait and illustration of the player’s home field making up a fun set. These are found in “denominations” of 1, 5 and 10.
