Love of the Game Topps 75th Anniversary Celebration

TOPPS 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AUCTION

1964

1 964 saw a 587-card release from Topps, once again with crisp photography at the forefront, paired with somewhat utilitarian design. Once again there were no innovations in the regular set and the relative scarcity of the final series cards continued to ease. A lengthy set of 164 Baseball Coins, made from aluminum and inserted in packs virtually all season long, jangled in the pockets of kids for months. The Shorin family that owned Topps were originally Brooklyn Dodgers fans, so when the almost-new National League entry Mets hosted the season’s All-Star Game in their sparkling new stadium, located next to the sprawling New York World’s Fair no less, the company decided to lay things on thick. Secondary issues included a now tough set of Baseball Photo Tattoos and the ever-popular green- and yellow Stand-Ups. If that wasn’t enough, a set of gorgeous Giant Size All-Stars was issued after the Midsummer Classic, a puzzling move in the wake of such excess, despite its excellent photography.
