TOPPS 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AUCTION
1965
A colorful 598 card set, their longest yet and the last fully produced and distributed out of Brooklyn, was sold to the public by Topps in 1965. Seven series were issued, and the last one, yet again, had relatively good availability. The colorful exuberance of the past year’s “extras” dissipated however, although they did come up with two 72-subject insert sets, a series of odd foil embossed portrait cards and a simply drawn set of Transfers. Perhaps gun-shy from the overproduction of the 1964 Giant All- Stars, no secondary sets were issued. For the first time, Topps licensed Canadian production of their annual baseball set to O-Pee-Chee (OPC) of London, Ontario, which saw a partial release, as would be the tradition going forward. Prior years had just seen Topps exporting their cards into the country, which were marketed by OPC with their own gum; the company had an even longer history than Topps. These often carry a premium compared to their U.S. counterparts and many years feature some variants as dictated by a slightly later production date and focus on Canadian natives.
