TOPPS 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AUCTION
1967
B elying difficulties the company was having with the newly fanged Major League Baseball Players Association, this popular Topps issue offered 609 well-composed and colorful cards to the buying public, a new record for set length. Known for its devilishly difficult high numbers, there are 11 super tough cards within the final series that populate most want lists today, including the key Tom Seaver rookie. The year’s insert was a set of thirty-two Pin-Ups, folded twice to fit in the packs and made of cheap pulp. Some waxy advertising strips promoting the Pin-Ups are thought to have been included in some packs and are very scarce today. The other story for 1967 was the increasing prevalence of test issues. The Punchboard concept of 1966 was amended and greatly expanded into a much larger set now called Baseball Punchout, issued in panels of three and sold in striking and large cellophane packs, seemingly centered on Baltimore. Regional sticker sets featuring Red Sox and Pirates players were released in their respective home environs and third regional set, thought to be for a proposed series of pin back buttons but known today only as proofs referred to as Baseball Discs, was prepared, solely with San Franciso players represented. A similar All-Star set of these so-called Discs was also created. Both Disc issues are remarkably scarce and only found as proofs today. If that wasn’t enough, a strange set called Baseball Plaks was issued in limited quantities, seemingly as a test. The “plaks” were just distorted-looking plastic busts of active players that buyers would insert into a base and sold three at a time on sprues, but the real attention grabbers were the 12-subject checklists, one for each league, with color headshots of each subject framed by black borders in a very pleasing combination. A small supply of these entered the hobby well after the issue date but they were quickly absorbed.
