TOPPS 75 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AUCTION
1970
T opps went with full-bleed gray borders for 1970 and increased the set length to a robust 720 subjects. With so many cards, the company was able to include many players who might not have made the cut in earlier years. The year’s high numbers reached a degree of difficulty not seen since 1967 and include the extremely popular Seattle Pilots team card; a year late but the sole one they ever issued as that particular subset had been excised for 1969. The pack inserts being offered increased to three, all in color this time around, with a fold open Scratch-Off game, Player Posters - folded twice to fit - and mini comic Story Booklets enticing their young customers; all featured 24 subjects to further drive home the identities of the various teams - some newer than others - navigating the latest expansion era. A 42-card set of Super Baseball cards was created, bulked up in thickness and dimension. That was the major supplemental set for the year; a really limited series of 24 Baseball Stars Lids, which capped a small tub of hard candy, came and went quickly and is prized today. An early experiment in creating textured stickers saw an in-house materials test take 1970 cards and print them on a cloth-like substrate. Described once as encompassing sixty-six subjects, not even half that number have been found to date, and they are among the hardest vintage Topps in-house experiments to locate today.
