SHEERLINE WINS BEST TECHNICAL INNOVATION AT GGP INSTALLER AWARDS FOR THE THIRD TIME

Sheerline’s Prestige Reverse Butt Joint has been named Best Technical Innovation at the GGP Installer Awards. This is the third time in five years the company has been recognised with this prestigious accolade, highlighting the central role that innovation plays within the business. When the announcement was made, the judges said it was great to see aluminium products using a reverse butt joint. The team at Sheerline couldn’t agree with this more as although this jointing method is commonly used within PVCu, it is relatively unheard of within aluminium. This is despite the benefits it offers to installers, like streamlining installation as it eliminates the need for external glazing, reverse adaptors, and dummy sashes. This not only saves time, but money too. It has been developed for use with the Prestige window system and is an evolution of Sheerline’s patented corner cleat. Using a unique T cleat enables fabricators to manufacture reverse butt jointed windows using the Prestige Z transom, which isn’t possible with legacy aluminium systems. The Prestige Reverse Butt Joint joins two of Sheerline’s other well-respected products that have also achieved the title of Best Technical Innovation. In 2020, the company took home the award for its Classic Window system and in 2022, for its S1 Roof Lantern. Roger Hartshorn, Sheerline CEO, commented: “The fact we’ve won this award three times for three very different products is a testament to our commitment to developing innovative, technically advanced products that not only push the boundaries of what is possible, but also put our

customers first by providing them with tangible benefits.” Martin Hepburn, Sheerline’s Area Sales Manager – South West, collected the award on behalf of the team and said: “There was a fantastic atmosphere at the ceremony, and I’m delighted to have collected the award on behalf of Sheerline. Huge thanks to the GGP team for putting on a great event.” Installers and fabricators interested in finding out more about Sheerline’s Prestige Reverse Butt Joint are invited to contact the team directly on 01332 978 000 or via email info@sheerline.com

WHITELINE MEETS DEMAND FOR HERITAGE-INSPIRED DESIGNS WITH SHEERLINE

Since Whiteline Manufacturing Ltd launched Sheerline’s Classic Heritage Door last October, the fabricator has seen a significant increase in demand for heritage-inspired designs, particularly from those who want a steel-look aesthetic combined with truly modern performance. It was specifically selected to complement Whiteline’s aluminium offering as the company already produces the popular Classic range and felt the Heritage door was the perfect extension to complete this suite of products. Aside from the ultra-slim aluminium profiles designed to emulate the steel-look aesthetic, Sheerline’s Classic Heritage Door was selected for its versatility. Particularly as it suits both interior and exterior use, making it popular with homeowners and architects alike. Thanks to Sheerline’s zero-threshold option, it can be installed as an internal door. This makes it the perfect solution for those families who want to embrace open plan living, with an uninterrupted flow of natural light through the home. Heritage-style products are growing in popularity, and part of the appeal of the Classic Heritage Door is its authentic styling thanks to a period-inspired lockbox design. This timeless look makes it ideal for projects ranging from contemporary to character, and everything between. No stranger to Sheerline’s products, Whiteline were one of the first fabricators to start selling the innovative aluminium range. The partnership has gone from strength to strength, resulting in a collaboration to develop a unique feature for this product, which will be launched in late Q1. Louise Evans, Group Commercial Director, said: “Whiteline and Sheerline have had a solid

relationship for many years and share many common traits, like innovation and service, which make them the perfect partnership.” Tony Basile, Sheerline’s National Sales Director, commented: “When we at Sheerline say our fabricators are our partners – we mean it. We’ve been working with Whiteline since the beginning, and our relationship is built on mutual respect and understanding. Our values very much align, which is why this partnership has flourished over the years.” “We aren’t surprised to hear the Classic Heritage Door has been popular – it offers everything homeowners want; it’s stylish, secure, on trend, and versatile,” he added. Several years ago, my Grandad who was the head of the family and like a father to me, lost his battle with cancer.

He had beat it once and been in remission. This filled us all with hope and we almost forgot he had ever had it. Then came the devasting news that it had returned, and this time to take his life. Watching someone who meant so much to me transform from a larger-than-life character to a mere shadow of the fun-loving figure that had always been a huge part of my life still hurts today. More needs to be done. More screening to detect the early signs of this disease. More to find treatments and cures for all types of cancer. I’m doing this ride to help raise money for CRUK, hoping that one day we will beat cancer.”

Chris Wann “As a young person growing up cancer diagnoses have always

been something that was there in the background,

being the cause of death for two of my grandparents and regularly other names mentioned by my parents

outside the family. Back then I was too young to understand the disease and the work that goes into medical research to prevent deaths and prolong lives. The first realisation that cancer can affect anyone at any age came when my best friend’s mum died some 9 months after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, and then the real leveller was my wife of only 1 month being diagnosed with Stage 1 Type 2 breast cancer in 2022. Luckily, we caught it relatively early and 9 months later after surgery and some incredible

care from the NHS and Macmillan she was one of the fortunate ones to be declared cancer-free. But it’s not something that anyone can get over quickly and our lives are forever changed as a result. Since her all clear she has amazed me with her positive attitude to her experience and as a seasoned ultra runner she completed the hard moors 110 mile ultra only a year after her diagnosis raising around £1000 for Breast Cancer `Now. This has inspired me to fundraise for Macmillan and Cancer Research in previous years and now I’m happy to step up again with a great bunch of guys to do our bit for cancer research and men’s mental health, a cause that has supported some good friends of mine through some tough times. Together we can turn small contributions into something that could have a big effect on others wellbeing and their quality of life.”

“Just over two years ago Becca’s uncle

was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer at

the age of 59, after a short six-month battle he rapidly deteriorated and unfortunately he

couldn’t fight any longer and we lost him, this took a massive hit on both sides of our families and a huge loss, I always promised Becca and her family that I would do something like LEJOG in his memory and also to support the cancer research charity. Then back in October 2023, my mum fell ill for some time, and like most people at that age they don’t do the Drs, after persuading her to go get checked out she got the news we were all dreading... the C word. She was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer that was spreading rapidly and incurable. Told that she wouldn’t live to see another birthday was news any son didn’t want to hear, after receiving this news I knew I needed to act quickly on an idea to support her and that she could see this happen and make her proud. To date, she is stable but still battling with this dreadful disease and has undergone various long-winded chemotherapy sessions which is a killer in itself. She is 74 this year and battling on, I came up with the idea of LEJOG to Leigh last year and he just smiled and laughed but I could see in his eye that he was keen because like us all we have our own personal statements to do something to help to raise as much awareness more than anything that this disease can’t be taken lightly and is a threat to everyone. I also want to raise with the help of three great friends and riders in particular Leigh who has been a great friend for some time now and raise as much money as possible for cancer research, with the three of us all being from the same industry this is a great way to do this. Personally, this will be a huge challenge and experience for a hobby that has been taken back up over the last five years and one that our families can look back at and be proud to say we did this for a great cause.”

Gareth Turner “At some point in our lives, we are affected by cancer, I am no exception - my wife Justine is surviving Malignant Melanoma Skin - one year on and cancer-free

My Father-in-Law Arnie is undergoing treatment for Bladder Cancer both fighting to survive this disease. Cancer Research is pivotal in the search for treatments Although awareness and support around Mental Health is much more spoken of, I and many others have been closely affected by Mental Health and Suicide having recently lost my Twin Brother Graeme in October last year and 3 years ago my lifelong friend Ian (Ozzy) Andy Mans Club started as a local charity in my home town of Halifax and works tirelessly to support and raise awareness of Men’s Mental Health - they now have groups that meet every Monday evening around the country offering a safe space for men to talk openly and without judgement around their mental health understanding that #itsoktotalk

RETROFITTING ENERGY-EFFICIENT WINDOWS KEY TO ACCELERATE MANDATORY UPGRADING OF MILLIONS OF SOCIAL HOMES

With local authorities and housing associations facing acute pressure to upgrade millions of social homes in line with modern net zero and thermal performance standards, retrofitting energy- efficient windows and doors will offer a vital way forward. This is the view of Retrofit Right – Making Social Housing More Energy-Efficient, which explores how the sector can decarbonise 4.4 million UK social homes across the UK – mostly built between 1945 and 1980 – in line with legislative requirements and available funding. This new whitepaper from polymer specialist REHAU confronts the scale of this challenge by demonstrating the crucial nature of informed specification of window and door systems. It underlines the importance of these key components in affecting heat loss in residential properties, detailing relevant standards, regulations and metrics such as those governing thermal performance, noise attenuation, security and ventilation. The report goes on to emphasise the importance of local authorities establishing, bolstering and maintaining supply chains to ensure the specification of high-quality components in these retrofitting efforts. As explained by Martin Hitchin, CEO at REHAU UK, this third-party supply chain support is also key to bridging knowledge gaps and easing workloads within the social housing sector that may be exacerbated by the scope of the required works.

“The UK’s residential sector is under great pressure

to reduce emissions in line with net zero targets, including a 78% drop in emissions by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2050,” he explains. “As social housing is publicly owned, there’s undoubtedly additional pressure on local authorities to decarbonise, and also to ensure that every pound spent works as hard as possible to achieve the desired energy efficiency improvements. For strained local authorities and housing association teams, this

combination of raised expectations and the sheer scale of decarbonising millions of social housing properties make this a daunting challenge. “As major sources of heat loss within properties, windows and door systems have a key role to play in improving the thermal performance of social housing. This is why we launched this latest whitepaper – it provides valuable advice on

when selecting new frames. Specifically, it encourages decisionmakers to explore data- driven technologies including integrated digital ID cards for individual frames to streamline later maintenance works for local authorities and housing associations. performance standards of frames are undoubtedly key for local authorities and housing associations carrying out retrofitting projects,” Martin concludes. However, those selecting components should also see how added services can streamline ongoing maintenance works, including breakages and installing additional accessories. Material considerations and Innovations such as REHAU’s Window.ID provide quick access to key data and fenestration experts, greatly reducing the need for time-consuming inspection or measurement appointments. As detailed in Retrofit Right, these innovations can allow housing associations and local authorities to save money by reducing the number of visits to affected properties, ensuring efficient and effective maintenance. REHAU advises fenestration professionals and social housing stakeholders alike

how to approach the frame specification and upgrading process, complying with relevant standards and regulations, and the

importance of medium retrofits in achieving these goals. Retrofit Right goes on to emphasise the importance of selecting sustainable materials such as coextruded polymer and advises social housing stakeholders to go beyond the point-of-purchase

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPECIFYING HIGH-QUALITY DOOR CLOSERS ON FIRE DOORS

Andy Howland, Sales & Marketing Director at GEZE UK, discusses why specifying high quality door closers on fire doors is important… Fire doors are essential components in building safety, acting as barriers that help contain smoke and flames during a fire. While the fire door itself must meet strict regulations, the quality of the door closer is equally crucial. Specifying high- quality door closers is vital for ensuring that fire doors function reliably, maintain safety standards, and enhance the users experience. Let’s now explore this in more detail. Reliable Performance in Emergencies: The primary function of a fire door is to contain fires and protect escape routes. High-quality door closers are designed to ensure that fire doors close securely and completely after being opened. This capability is essential in preventing smoke and flames from spreading, thus providing occupants with crucial time to evacuate safely. Compliance with Regulations: Fire safety regulations and building codes dictate specific requirements for fire doors and their hardware. High-quality door closers are typically tested to ensure they adhere to either EN1154 or EN1155. Specifying products that meet these standards ensures compliance with legal requirements and reduces liability for building owners. Longevity Under High Traffic: Fire doors are often located in high-traffic areas, such as hallways and entry points. High-quality door closers are built from tested, durable materials in order to withstand frequent use without compromising their performance. Cheaper, low-quality models

may wear out quickly, leading to malfunctioning doors that fail to close properly or safely. Smooth Operation : High-quality door closers provide adjustable closing forces and speeds, allowing for a smooth, reliable and controlled closure. This feature is particularly important in environments where users may have varying levels of strength, such as in schools or healthcare facilities. A smoother operation minimises the risk of injury and enhances the overall user experience. Accommodating Accessibility Needs: Fire doors must be accessible to all individuals, including those with disabilities. Quality door closers can be adjusted to ensure that the door opens with low force, closes gently and does not pose challenges for users with mobility issues. This attention to detail fosters an inclusive environment while still maintaining safety standards.

Reduced Maintenance Needs: Investing in high-quality door closers often results in lower maintenance costs over time. Reliable models require less frequent servicing, which can save building owners both time and money. In contrast, low-quality closers may need regular adjustments, repairs or replacements, leading to increased operational and product lifetime costs. Cost Savings in the Long Run : While the initial investment in quality door closers may be higher, the long-term benefits outweigh the costs. Enhanced safety, reduced liability, and lower maintenance needs all contribute to a more cost- effective solution over the lifespan of the door and its hardware. Nicola John Managing Director at Fire Door Maintenance - part of UAP Ltd

Nicola John, Managing Director of Fire Door Maintenance, part of UAP Ltd said: “The government’s response is a step in the right direction—but it doesn’t go far enough. Tougher rules are welcome, but real safety isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about making sure the right people are in place and have the skills and knowledge they need. “Fire safety legislation demands greater detail. We’re a long way from where we need to be, and the industry doesn’t yet have a clear career path for specifiers,

inspectors, maintainers and installers throughout the fire door chain to guarantee that those responsible for critical safety measures have the skills and authority to do their job properly. That’s what we’re mapping out at FDM, offering specialist training and clear accreditation routes. “While there’s a focus on fixing construction products, the real issue runs deeper—this is about behaviour, accountability, and a culture that has, for too long, put cost-cutting ahead of safety. The Building Safety Act’s move

to demonstrate competence has started the process, but it’s not enough. We need a sharper spotlight on those who sign off on unsafe buildings and those who knowingly cut corners. “There’s been a lot of talk about cultural change and empowering social housing, but talk doesn’t save lives. Industry-wide action does. The government must go further, act faster, and ensure these reforms lead to real, lasting change. We need legislation that forces the industry to act, not sweeping reforms that lack detail.”

THE BENEFITS OF AUTOMATIC REVOLVING DOORS: A MODERN SOLUTION FOR TODAY’S ARCHITECTURE

Improved Traffic Flow Automatic revolving doors are designed to facilitate the seamless movement of people in and out of a building. In high-traffic areas, such as hotels, shopping centres and office complexes, these doors allow for a continuous flow of foot traffic without the need for manual operation. This not only speeds up entry and exit but also reduces congestion at the entrance, creating a more pleasant experience for visitors. For businesses, this efficiency can translate into higher customer

satisfaction and retention. Aesthetic Appeal

In an age where efficiency, sustainability, and user experience are paramount in building design, automatic revolving doors emerge as a compelling choice. These architectural features do more than just add a touch of elegance to a building’s entrance; they offer a range of benefits that enhance both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Let’s now explore those benefits in more detail. Energy Efficiency One of the most significant benefits of automatic revolving doors is their energy efficiency. Unlike traditional swinging doors, revolving doors create a barrier that minimises the exchange of indoor and outdoor air. This design prevents drafts and helps maintain a consistent indoor climate, reducing the reliance on heating and cooling systems. In a world grappling with climate change and rising energy costs, utilising revolving doors can lead to significant savings on energy bills while contributing to a building’s sustainability goals.

From an architectural standpoint, automatic revolving doors are undeniably striking. They provide a sleek and contemporary look that enhances a building’s facade. With various design options available—ranging from glass finishes to custom sizes—these doors can be tailored to match the specific aesthetic of any building. A well- designed entrance can set the tone for a positive first impression, making automatic revolving doors an attractive choice for businesses looking to make an impact. Noise Reduction In urban environments, noise pollution is an ever- present challenge. Automatic revolving doors can help mitigate this issue by creating a sound barrier between the bustling outside world and the tranquillity within. This reduction in noise enhances the overall comfort of occupants, making spaces more enjoyable for both visitors and employees.

Enhanced Hygiene Hygiene can be enhanced by reducing the need for people to touch door handles or push doors, helping to limit the spread of germs and bacteria. Motion sensors that detect movement and automatically open and close doors can achieve this. This is especially important in high-traffic areas like hospitals, shopping centres and restaurants, where maintaining hygiene is essential.
