an industry where people can so quickly be replaced for the next new face,”says Barnes. “It felt wonderful to be nominated and to win something so close to my hometown of Hawkesbury... winning an award for do- ing something I love feels like the icing on the cake.” Barnes was recently invited to judge and scout new faces at the Talent Inc. modeling competition held at the Disney Site in Or- lando, Florida. She was the only top model invited to join the high-ranking panel that consisted of the top talent scouts from agencies such as Ford, Wilhelmina, and Marilyn. She also participated on a panel discussion about how to become and stay successful in the industry. This was fol- lowed by a Q & A session with all the up and coming model contestants. This same event was where the well-known Brooklyn Decker was discovered. “It is a business. This is a highly competi- tive business,” says Barnes. “It is important that young women do not get sucked into what the media feeds off. You are the prod- uct. You face rejection every single day.” At the tender age of 15 she booked the GFF Ferre campaign and opened his show during fashion week in Milan. One of her other famous campaigns was Blondissimes by L’Oreal, that featured here side by side with international recording artist Gwen Stefani to name a few. When she was in high school, not all of her peers were sup- portive of her blossoming career. “That was when I found out who my real friends were,”

LOS ANGELES | International fashion mod- el Brianna Barnes is proving she is much more than a pretty face. After 12 years of working on the runways of the world, Barnes has been diversifying her portfolio, branching out into film and TV. “I am trying to transition into other fields. I enjoy speaking roles and I like to have more say in the creative process,”the Hawkesbury native said Monday during a telephone in- terview from her home in Los Angeles. Currently a host of the Globe Trekker travel television series, on this day, Barnes was preparing to travel to Ottawa, where she received the “Favourite Model of the Year” from Faces Magazine. “We’ve been de- lighted to follow Brianna and watch the rise in her career, working with some of the big- gest names in fashion,” said Kyle Turk, CEO and co-founder of Faces Magazine. “We’re honoured to present this award to Brianna as she is the “Fan Favorite” having received thousands of votes.” She has received numerous awards in the fashion industry since she began modelling at the age of 15, while she was in Grade 9 at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute.“Being a Canadian and having enjoyed a longstand- ing career around the globe, it is a huge honour to be remembered and supported by the people fromback home, especially in

she remarks. The business is not as glamour as outsiders may believe. “When I started out, people were expecting that I would be driven around in a limousine. In fact, we mod- els were taking the subway, running around lost in Italy, and nobody spoke English.” Barnes has gone on to distinguish herself as one of the fashion industries top models having walked the runway for the likes of Gucci, Dior, Ferre, Valentino, YSL, Prada, Armani, Nanette Lepore, and Ferragamo, as well as having been seen on shows such as Fashion Television, Project Runway and Fashion File. She has worked with the likes of Ralph Lau- ren. Today, Barnes is becoming a familiar face on different platforms. She was recently selected by “Fameus”the just launched entertainment industry’s mobile networking app, to provide expert industry insight and her feedback about the needs within the industry for the new social network that connects the modeling and entertainment industry. She is also becoming a member of the large Canadian contingent that continues to be promi- nent in the entertainment business. An“Eh? List”party she recently attended highlighted the wealth of Canuck talent. “We are taking over and I love being part of it.”
