Fearing the spread of “Franken hay” RICHARD MAHONEY richard.mahoney@eap.on.ca

Canada is grown in combination with other grasses that are not herbicide tolerant, it is quite clear that GM Alfalfa is not needed,” said René Harnisch, a dairy farmer from Cur- ran. “Farmers do not want GM Alfalfa and consumers do not want to buy GM prod- uct.” Gills added. “Furthermore, it threatens our alfalfa export markets.” “We refuse to let one company destroy our livelihoods with GM alfalfa,” said Ann Slater, farmer and member of the NFU. “Farmers are standing up against this uncontrolled biotech experiment and we thank consum- ers for joining us in this fight.”

lease of the product. Forage Genetics International has applied Monsanto’s genetically modified Roundup Ready technology to alfalfa. Canadian reg- ulatory authorities approved GM alfalfa for health and environmental release in 2005. There is one more step that must be com- pleted before GM alfalfa is commercially released in Canada – variety registration under the Canadian Food and Inspection Agency (CFIA). This step could be complet- ed as early as this spring. Alfalfa is a perennial plant that is insect pollinated, therefore, NFU-O members be- lieve that if GM alfalfa is commercially re- leased, GM alfalfa will inevitably cross-pol- linate with non-GM and organic alfalfa and threaten the livelihoods of family farmers across Canada. As prairie alfalfa seed grow- ers and farmers have already rejected GM alfalfa, the seed industry has said they only want to introduce GM alfalfa into Eastern Canada. “It is inevitable that GM alfalfa will con- taminate non-GM hay fields,” said Gills. “When bees go about their business pol- linating plants, they will not discriminate between the pollen from GM alfalfa and non-GM alfalfa.” “Since the majority of the alfalfa grown in

HAWKESBURY| “Franken Hay” will spell trouble for countless numbers of Cana- dian farmers. That was the warning from the regional wing of the National Farmers Union Tues- day during a demonstration held at Glen- garry-Prescott-Russell MP Pierre Lemieux’s Hawkesbury office. Genetically modified (GM) alfalfa will have serious ramifications if it becomes widely available, cautioned Les Gills, a Martintown farmer who is president of the 185-member Local 362 of the National Farmers Union. The prime concern is that GM alfalfa will contaminate other non-modified crops, notes Gills. Lemieux was not at his office during the protest, organized by the area NFU affiliate, which represents farmers in Prescott-Rus- sell and Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry. The members have organized a petition urging the federal government to prevent the spread of GM alfalfa. The Day of Action Rally to Stop GM Alfalfa was part of a campaign to lobby MPs and Agriculture Minister Ger Ritz to block the re-
