Bursary Appeal 2023

Bursary Appeal 2023

Our social mission We are proud to celebrate a history spanning over 400 years of offering access to education to talented boys from a wide range of backgrounds. The diversity of our community today serves to enrich the experience of every pupil who attends the College and is a defining aspect of the education we offer. Ultimately, we aspire to become a school that can offer places to any boy who could benefit, regardless of their family’s economic circumstances. Expanding our provision to achieve this will be a generational mission, but one that is already underway – thanks to all those who have already given their support. By making a gift to the Bursary Appeal, you can make a difference to a boy’s life. I hope you will consider making a donation today.

“For me, Dulwich offered not just a good education and fantastic resources, but there was also an amazing culture. Going to Dulwich, you absorb this ethos of working hard and being aspirational, and it becomes a part of you. It’s an experience you can’t put a price on as the value given extends long beyond school life.” James Oyedele OA (2005-11). James attended a local state primary and was only able to come to Dulwich because he received a substantial bursary award. Through playing rugby at the College, James was able to visit South Africa and New Zealand, and his work has enabled him to continue travelling worldwide, including time living in Singapore, and now New York.

We would be deeply grateful.

The Bursary Appeal Fund The College relies on the philanthropic support of alumni, current and former parents, staff, and friends of the College to help fund bursary places, alongside our own financial resources. The endowed Bursary Appeal Fund currently stands at £18.6 million, enabling us to offer financial support to double the number of boys at the College today compared to 2013. The majority of those who are in receipt of bursarial support benefit from fee remission of 75% or more. By growing the Bursary Appeal Fund we will be able to support future generations of talented boys who are unable to attend the College solely due to their economic circumstances. A gift to the Bursary Appeal Fund, of any size, will make an impact the lives of boys and their families who can benefit from financial assistance with fees and have the opportunity of a life-changing education.

“The Dulwich Experiment transformed not only my father’s life, but the lives of everyone in my family. Both his parents were factory workers and would have never been able to afford the fees but thanks to receiving a Dulwich Experiment place, he went on to become a chartered surveyor and was able to afford the fees for me to attend Dulwich in turn. I am forever grateful to the College not only for what it has given me, but what it has done for my whole family.”

Nick Howe OA (1974-80) is an example of the ongoing impact of bursaries. While Nick was not a bursary recipient himself, his father, Thomas ‘Hooky’ Howe OA (1946-53) was able to attend Dulwich College thanks to a local authority funded place Thomas trained as a Chartered Surveyor and remained involved with the College as both a member of the Rugby Club, and later Captain of the OA Golf Society. Thomas also served as Chair of during the Dulwich Experiment. Following attending the College, Governors of the Dulwich Estate and as a Governor of Dulwich College. Upon leaving the College, Nick followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a chartered surveyor, as has Nick’s daughter. Nick is currently the Chairman of the Old Alleynian Association.

Help us do more The provision of fee support has been a key aspect throughout the College’s history, starting with the Founder’s provision to educate “twelve poor scholars” alongside other pupils. At points during the 50s and 60s, as many as 85% of boys received free places through local government funding as part of the “Dulwich Experiment”, which was then succeeded by the Assisted Places scheme in the 80s and 90s. Since the cessation of government funding, the College has funded means-tested fee relief from its own resources. Today, we spend more than £4 million per annum on bursaries. Donations are a key part of funding those who need financial aid to attend the College.

“The thought that there are still so many talented young students who miss out on the opportunity to succeed purely for lack of funding is something I feel strongly about. Dulwich not only produces well-educated Old Alleynians, but men who are still minded of their background and those of others. I take great pride in giving back to the College which has done so much for me.”

We are grateful to everyone who supports the Bursary Appeal Fund.

Robert Ottey OA (1982-89) applied to Dulwich knowing he would need a fully funded place to be able to attend, but was always encouraged by his parents that it was a possibility. During his time at the College, Robert played tuba in a number of music ensembles, and went on to study Chemistry at University of Cambridge. Robert is now a Chartered Accountant and has held senior audit roles both in the UK and abroad. Robert is now an internal audit leader in international banking, with recent long spells living abroad in Singapore and the USA before returning to the UK.

“My trajectory changed because of Dulwich and my life accelerated because of the opportunities I was given at the College.” Filip Twarowski OA (2011-13) was able to attend Dulwich thanks to the UWC Polska Scholarship Programme. Dulwich enabled Filip to experience unique learning opportunities like visiting CERN which in turn acted as a springboard for him to attend MIT with a scholarship. Following university, Filip developed the first software for auto-complete on emails and has previously featured in Forbes Poland’s “25 Under 25.”
