Inertia/Rollover Safety Switches
A s the advantages of elec- tronic fuel-injection caught on and in-tank high-pressure fuel pumps became the norm, delivering that fuel required more than a simple rubber hose. Even if you haven’t converted your engine to injection, there are many situ- ations where we use electric low-pressure fuel pumps in car- bureted applications. These elec- tric fuel pumps, high- or low- pressure, have introduced new considerations for circuit protec- tion and crash-related fuel-flow control. During the construction of a recent project utilizing a small-block Ford 5.0 engine equipped with an Edelbrock car- buretor and intake, the absence of a mechanical fuel pump required the installation of an electric unit. While the universal wiring harness provided a dedi- cated electric fuel pump circuit, additional safety measures were
necessary to mitigate uncon- trolled fuel delivery in the event of a collision. Electric fuel pumps will contin- ue to operate as long as they receive power, regardless of vehi- cle orientation or structural dam- age. In a crash or rollover, this can result in continuous fuel dis- charge, significantly increasing the risk of fire. OEM manufactur- ers address this hazard through inertia-type fuel pump cutoff switches, which interrupt power when subjected to a defined impact threshold. In retrofit appli- cations, these switches are often overlooked, despite being inex- pensive, readily available, and simple to integrate. Their func- tion is critical; upon sensing a sudden deceleration or rollover event, the internal mechanism opens the circuit, immediately disabling the pump. For this build, a Ford Fox- body Mustang inertia switch
was selected due to its reliabili- ty, availability, and compatibility with low-pressure pump circuits. Typical retail cost is approxi- mately $30. The unit includes power input and output termi- nals for series installation in the pump feed circuit and a mechanical reset plunger locat- ed on the top of the housing, along with mounting provisions suitable for under-dash or kick- panel placement. When installing, the reset plunger must remain accessible to the operator, as the switch must be manually reset after activation. The device should be mounted in a rigid, upright orientation consistent with OEM practice to ensure proper impact sensitivity. Incorporating an inertia (impact/rollover) safety switch into any electric fuel pump cir- cuit is a best-practice measure that aligns aftermarket builds with OEM safety standards. Considering the wide variety of engine/vehicle builds happening today, we as builders and inspectors have a responsibility to anticipate failure modes before they occur. A simple cut- off switch can prevent a small collision from escalating into a vehicle fire.
