Several students at the school also have a more personal connection to Remem- brance Day this year because members of their own families served as part of Cana- da’s armed forces stationed in Afghanistan during the international military alliance against the Taliban following the Sept. 11 2001 attack on the World Trade Centre in New York City. Canada’s role in the Afghan War is over now but the country’s armed forces are now joining with others in $ght- ing the ISIS terrorist group in the Middle East. “So we decided to create our own High- way of Heroes,” Foy said. As part of the project, each class at the school chose a symbol for its part in deco- rating the main halls circling the building interior. Maple leaves, drawings related to Remembrance Day symbols, and other artwork and short thank-you notes to the Armed Forces, and other articles adorn the walls. The Highway ends at the school foyer in front with a display of handmade wreaths below the Maple Leaf !ag draped on the wall. The last “piece” of the Highway was set in place at 10:15 a.m., Nov. 11. “Just in time for the ceremony,” Foy said. The St. Patrick Highway of Heroes will re- main in place until the end of the month. This year Foy and her project partner, Rob- ert Decoste, proposed creation of a St. Pat- rick’s Highway of Heroes. The school library has a book about the Highway of Heroes project in Ottawa and many students were made aware of the special route through downtown Ottawa following last month’s tragic incident at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial when Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was shot and killed while standing sentry duty there.
