Shepard Fairey is a contemporary artist and activist best known as the founder of OBEY Clothing, a streetwear brand rooted in skateboarding and DIY counterculture. He blends street art, graphic design and corporate marketing aesthetics to create art that promotes social and political awareness. Fairey designed a series of posters supporting Barack Obama’s candidacy, with the messages “hope,” “change” and “vote,” ahead of the 2008 U.S. presidential election.
