Little is known about the unidentified maker of this cupboard, but they would have been active around Elbert County, Georgia, during the mid-19th century. This cupboard descended in the Smith family of Bowman, Georgia. Previously an extended loan from the Mullis Collection, it will be on view in the reinstalled Phoebe and Ed Forio Gallery this fall. Born in South Carolina, Hilliard L. Edwards later lived in Savannah, Georgia, where he worked at a stone yard. He made this baker’s cabinet for his wife, Josephine, reusing scrap lumber and other materials to create a “make-do” version resembling cabinets that could have been bought in a store at the time. Its surface shows its years of use in bread making, and it is rich with family memories. Previously on extended loan, the baker’s cabinet will also be on view in the reinstalled Forio Gallery. Collin Rhodes owned multiple pottery factories in the Edgefield District of South Carolina during the early to mid-1800s, where enslaved African American artisans produced thousands of stoneware vessels. Pottery from Rhodes’ factories is distinctive for its use of elaborate slip decoration, typically featuring floral motifs in white kaolin or dark iron slip.
