FALL 2024

TIME KEEPS ON TICKING

Do you realize our Second Avenue Subway the Q line opened on January 1, 2017 meaning it will soon begin its ninth year of operation? Have you ever wondered why our practice has big large glass windows? I mean they are really big and I’ve been told you would need a crane to transport the glass up from the street. I’m on the second floor so you can’t see them from the sidewalks. The answer lies in the fact that there use to be a Second Avenue El for the elevated subway line. The 85Th street station was right in front of the office. The practice at that time was a two story hardware store. Instead of fixing teeth they were fixing plumbing, electrical and foundations. So, when you exited the subway car, you could look right into the store and maybe you’d come on in. With progress always occurring the line was torn down in 1954 and it only took 63 years for the city to replace it. It’s amazing that they actually finished it for here in New York what’s the hurry. The longer it takes the longer construction workers are working.

One way to tell a true New Yorker from a Californian is when taking the escalator at the 84th street entrance. A New Yorker will be running down it while a Californian will be relaxing and enjoying the ride. Sometimes you have to wonder what’s the rush; maybe because they’re always running late. In fact, the Long Island Railroad’s logo was Dashing Dan the harried New Yorker always on the run. When the Q subway line was being constructed a lucky few of us were able to go down into the big hole. It was quite big and something to experience. The tunnel boring machine was quite dinosauric. You could readily see that Manhattan Island is built on bedrock but around that rock was dirt and within that dirt were critters. The subway digging was destroying their homes and if you were out and about at night during those years you had a good chance of meeting some of them. Not a happy meeting for sure.

then you need to pay a visit to the MTA Subway Museum in Brooklyn. What they have done is taken a decommissioned subway station and transformed it into a walk-through museum. The interesting part is that it is actually a time machine, a time machine of your life. When you see it you will know it. They have all the subway cars over the years fully restored and the accoutrements that you interacted with while down there. The carousel entry, the gum and candy machines even the coffee service if you had an iron stomach. Back in the day you used tokens to enter and where you bought them were like little Fort Knox enclosures. Everything was in cash and just sitting there. Nighthawks, French Connection, Bananas, Money Train, The Warriors, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three to name a few were all filmed down there. There was a time when the subway tunnels were populated with rent free apartments no view here and you had to be very vigilant when going out and about. Hopefully that time will remain in the past. However, for getting around the Big Apple the subways are still the fastest route in town. Just put on your New Yorker persona and you’ll be just fine for as the sayings go: I’m walking Here, You’re Looking at Me, and remember to always; Step lively and Watch the Closing Doors. The Q, 4, 5, and 6 subway lines are all one block away from the office and with the summer ending it’s time to come on in for your exam and cleaning appointments. I hope all of you have had a wonderful summer and were able to take some time off to recharge. I look forward to seeing you soon.

If you have lived in New York City for most of your life and the subway is part of your travel experience

You’ve been to Central Park as millions of others have but did you know there are secrets within the park. Let’s take the Southern part of the park adjacent to Fifth Avenue and 59th Streets. Hidden here is a part within a park which park goers cannot access called Hallett’s Sanctuary. What’s different here is nature rules and in this four acres there is no park maintenance so if a tree falls its left where it lies. It’s a protective haven for plants and animals and off limits to humans leaving an area of the park in the wild. HIDDEN CENTRAL PARK EATING HEALTHY FOR YOUR HEALTH AND SMILE

Now traveling to the Northern edge of the park there is a structure which is the oldest structure in the park. It’s Blockhouse #1 the only remaining fortification built to repel the British during the War of 1812. New Yorker’s feared the British would attack Manhattan by boats on the East River. Several of these blockhouses were built for cannon placement to defend the island. Alas the British never attacked but one remains today to confirm their existence. Water in streams, lakes and waterfalls are in Central Park but are they really mirages. You see them; you can get wet in them and even row a boat in them. However, they are not really there. They have all been designed and are man-made structures which are supplied with water some through your typical garden hose. Makes the park seem a whole lot better but the whole park is manmade. It’s a needed oasis in our hectic city.

When you get up in the morning and before going to bed you need to brush your teeth. Brushing gets the top, front and back of your teeth but don’t forget in between your teeth. These surfaces also need to be cleaned. Here is where dental floss comes in. This thin tiny waxed strand can move into the spaces between your teeth and keep these areas clean. If you are a gum chewer make sure to avoid gums that contain sugar. There are plenty of sugarless gums now available. A dry mouth is conducive to dental decay so if your mouth is continually dry, chewing gum helps to produce saliva thereby keeping your mouth wet. Be careful in consuming sticky foods like caramel and taffy. These substances have a tendency to stick to your teeth and generally contain large amounts of sugar. Even dried fruit which seems to be healthy can be loaded with sugar and readily stick to your teeth. You want to consume nutritious foods such as raw fruits and vegetables which help to support your immune system. Do you like cheese – good for you! Cheese contains calcium that breaks down acids in your mouth which can attack your teeth. Cheese is tasty and enlivens your meals, but don’t go overboard since cheese is high in fat. Moderate your intake of acidic foods. No sucking on lemons here when having an ice tea or too many carbonated drinks. Direct and constant exposure to these substances will wear down the enamel or outer protective coating of your teeth. If you are routinely coming in for your exam and cleaning appointments I always check the condition of your teeth, gums and mouth and will inform you of any situations you should be concerned about.

Today pre diabetes is becoming rampant in the population. You do not have full blown diabetes where you need Insulin to survive but your sugar level in your bloodstream is dangerously high. Why is this? Well, it’s because most of us eat way too much sugar. There is sugar in everything but some of our eating choices cause us to ingest way too much. A good thing is that when you go to the supermarket, food labels now tell you how many grams of sugar are in the product you are buying. Even healthy foods such as yogurt can contain added sugar. The worst culprits are sodas. Looking at the label it’s like pouring a sugar bowl down your throat. Over time these increased levels of sugar intake cause havoc in your body in addition to enlarging your waist thereby putting increased pressure on your joints and your heart. As far as your teeth are concerned increased sugar intake can lead to dental cavities and gum disease. So if you want to watch the amount of sugar you are ingesting and to help your teeth remain healthy here are six things you should make as habits.

HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL

Another year, and will it be another disappointment? I’m writing this at the end of August and you’ll be getting this the end of September so by then their fates will be sealed. Whose fate? Their fate – your New York Yankees and New York Metropolitans i.e. Mets. Even though the Yankees are in first place in their division right now if George was still alive the Cash would be long gone. Last series win 2009 and it’s now 2024. Unacceptable! As for the Miracle Mets more like the miracle choke. Now at eight games back in their division they need to put the pedal to the metal now. Could things turn around look at A-Rod so anything’s possible or then there’s Pete Rose so maybe not. New Yorker’s need a winner and if you go to the stadiums with the prices you’ll pay justify us getting a winner.

Come September that’s the time to go to a baseball game. The nights are cooler and being at the ballpark can be quite enjoyable. How about a home town World Series last one in 2000 was almost a quarter century ago. It might be a New Yorker thing but we’re New Yorkers so who cares about the rest of the league. Eastside, Westside everybody’s coming down to Shea – well not anymore but the city does have Citi Field and as for the Yankees the new stadium now 15 years old is still a vast improvement over the old one even if you’re living in nostalgia land.

So maybe, just maybe this will be the year of winning – the city could sure use one.

Most of the patients in the practice have been restored and are now in continuing care meaning twice a year coming in for their recall exams and cleanings. Congratulations! No one likes coming to the dentist including me. It’s a lot different being the dental patient than the dentist. We like meeting new people and welcoming them into our practice. If you know of any lost dental souls – someone who does not have a happy dental home please let them know about us. We will treat them like we treat you and help to resolve any dental issues they have. We like to encourage referrals and we reward you for rewarding us by sending you something where you can purchase something online that you can enjoy. The summer is over and we’re all getting back to our routines so hopefully you did something enjoyable and are now ready to be cool in a cooler climate. THE GOOD NEWS
