THE KING’S BUSINESS

“ Read yourself full; write yourself clear; pray yourself clean.” “ Faith is not opposed to reason in the Bible, but it is ofttimes opposed to sight.” “ Him I will mock Who, being thirsty, climbs not to the spring, But. meanly drinks at rillet and low pool, And thirsteth still the mor e.’’—Pandora. “ Confession is deeper and more serious than profession. Confession is -a courage ous refusal to deny when challenged; pro fession is cheap. Confession in spirit pre pares for martyrdom.” “ Thou art chained to the wheel o f the foe By links which a world cannot sever: With thy tyrant, through storm and through calm thou shalt go, And thy sentence is bondage forever.” A speaker at a missionary conference said that the object o f that- gathering was to work down the “missionary spirit.” He explained that usually the missionary spirit first struck the head, after a while got as far as the mouth, then the heart, conscience, and will, and by and by the pocket, and last o f all the legs and feet. “ No star is ever lost we once have seen; W e always may be what we might have been. The hopes that lost in some- far distance seem, May be the truer life, and this the dream.” A hypocrite is a man who lives in a vain show and rests in the mere sem blance o f things. As actors on the stage who picture that they are kings, and pos sess large armies and great powers, who speak and conduct themselves with dignity; so men, professing faith and godliness, rest satisfied with the mere form and outline thereof.

the church interesting, I am afraid that we too often mean that the way to do it is' to make it entertaining. Did you ever know the theater to be a successful means o f governing conduct? Did you ever know the most excellent concerts or series of concerts to be the means o f revolutionizing a life? Did you ever know any amount of entertainment to go farther than hold for the hour that it lasted? I f you mean to draw young people by entertainment with something' that is not entertaining, but which grips the heart like the touch o f the hand, I dare say there is some excuse for alluring persons to a place where good will be. done them; but I think it would be a great deal better simply to let them under stand that the church is a place where life is dispensed, and, if they want life, they must come to that place.”— Exchange. It is- a most remarkable tribute to the Bible that the three greatest rulers of the greatest nations upon the earth have recently declared their confidence in it, not, alone as a guide for the people of their nation, but also for their unqualified belief in it as the W ord o f God. President Wilson said he held the same opinion of the Bible as that which his esteemed father, an orthodox Presbyterian minister held. He said -there' had been no occasion from his studies or experiences for him to change his opinion. In all the undertakings o f his life the Bible has been to him a guide. King George said in a recent address that he promised his mother to read a chapter in the Bible every day as long as he lived, and he had never broken that promise. With his mother, he believed the safety o f the British government1lay in their recogni tion of the Supreme Authority o f the Bible as the W ord o f God. At a recent gather ing of the religious men of Germany the Emperor said that it was a dangerous thing for people to depart from the teachings o f the Bible. He declared that he had no sym pathy with the modern, liberal opinions, but believed in the Divine Authority o f the Bible.
