T arragona was once the greatest city of Roman Spain, boasting emperors Hadrian and Augustus Caesar among its former residents. These days this exceptional city adopts a more low-key existence, compared to the sometimes more hectic coastal cities of Barcelona or Valencia. However, Tarragona still retains the magical elements of the very best Catalan cities, boasting a beautiful Gothic cathedral, an unbeatable location, charming narrow streets, a superb gastronomy and the dazzling Mediterranean sun. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its impressive and well-preserved Roman fortifications, Tarragona is also a renowned centre of arts and culture, a busy fishing and shipping port, as well as a natural base for the pristine beaches of the Costa Dorada. In addition to numerous restaurants and tapas bars in the lovely historic district, some with ancient walls incorporated into their décor, there are others scattered throughout Eixample, the city’s modern neighbourhood, and also a number of excellent seafood spots at the fishing port, El Serrallo.
