Hip-Hopping at NLDC North London Dance Centre (NLDC) was thrilled to welcome two instructors from 519 School of Hip Hop, who taught workshops to 17 students on the ‘Fundamentals of Street Dance’. “They shared both their knowledge of the movement and the history behind this genre,” explained Kelly Hajar, NLDC Director. “Students always benefit from learning more about the culture, foundation, history, and message of Hip Hop. Congratulations to all the dancers who participated — many stepped well outside their comfort zones to try something totally new, and that’s what growth is all about!” The school is celebrating their 29th year of offering all styles of dance instruction in Hyde Park to children and adults. down on the side of the road is not only frustrating but also puts your safety at risk! Upon request, we can check your brakes, battery, suspension, engine oil, fluid levels, tire pressures, tire life, lights, cabin filters, air filters, belts, and windshield wipers. These are all crucial components in safe winter driving. Winter tires are crucial for safety and performance during cold, icy, and snowy conditions. Look for the peaked mountain with a snowflake symbol when shopping for winter tires. Tires marked with this symbol meet specific snow traction performance requirements and have been designed specifically for use in severe snow conditions. At temperatures below 7°C, all-season and summer tires begin to lose elasticity, leading to less traction. Winter tires keep their elasticity and grip at much lower temperatures. Investing in winter tires is an investment in safety. They can make the difference between a safe winter journey and a potentially dangerous one. While they may seem like an additional expense, the peace of mind and improved control they offer on winter roads are priceless, making winter tires an essential purchase for anyone facing cold and snowy conditions. Message from the Mayor by Mayor Josh Morgan mayor@london.ca 519-661-4920

have the support and shelter they need as temperatures drop. We’re also keeping a close eye on neighbourhood infrastructure, such as roads, sidewalks, and parks, to ensure they’re safe and well-maintained for the cold. I’ve had the pleasure of attending several local events, busi- ness gatherings, and important community conferences recen- tly, and I want to thank everyone for their engagement and questions during the Q&A sessions I’ve held. I continue to be inspired by the energy and ideas that residents share. From conversations about housing and safety to new parks and local improvements, your voices are the core of our work shaping London’s future. As we move toward the holiday season, I encourage everyone to take time to enjoy what makes this city great—our trails dressed in autumn colours, local markets full of seasonal favourites, and the warmth of community gatherings. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, happy, and peaceful November.

As the last leaves fall and we prepare to hang up our rakes and haul out the snow shovels, I want to take a moment to connect with you about what’s happening here at City Hall and across our great city. This time of year always reminds me of how much pride Londoners take in their communities. Whe-

ther it’s a neighbour helping with yard work, volunteers organizing food drives and local events, or families getting ready for the holiday season, it’s those acts of kindness that make London such a special place to call home. I want to give a special shout-out to everyone who participated in London Food Bank’s fall collection, which exceeded expectations and featured a $85,000 donation from a single donor. The way Londoners step up for each other is unlike any other city, and I’m grateful to everyone who gives freely of their time to make our city a better place. Over at City Hall, our mission is the same, and Council is busy preparing for the winter months ahead by ensuring our snow- clearing teams are ready to go and our most vulnerable residents

Ward 7 Update by Corrine Rahman, Ward 7 City Councillor crahman@london.ca 226-577-3774 Dear Neighbours,

The City has undertaken $300 million in construction work this year. Some of these projects are carryovers from multi-year projects, including BRT. I know this construction season has been difficult, but necessary to address aging infrastructure in our community. This month, Council will be focused on the Mayor’s 2026 annual budget update. Your input on the budget is important. You can learn more about the process and provide your feedback at getinvolved. london.ca/budget. Please reach out should you have any questions or concerns about the budget or any other issue. Yours in Community, Corrine

Fall is here; I love taking in the view from the 12th floor of City Hall! If you are interested in viewing opportunities, please visit london.ca for more information.

There is a lot going on in the City. At Council, we are reviewing the urban growth boundary – to establish where new homes, businesses and other urban developments can occur. We’ve approved the plan to build 60 micro-modular shelters for unhoused people by the end of the year. The City is moving forward with a tiered approach to bring people inside during cold-weather alerts. When temperatures dip below -15°C we will activate a temporary overnight warming centre at Boyle Memorial Community Centre. Additionally, ongoing support for 70 beds run year-round by Ark Aid Mission will continue. While all these temporary options are necessary, stable housing remains our goal. Council is continuing our work to reach our goal of 600 highly supportive housing units and our roadmap to 3000 affordable units.

Cultural Cooking On September 26th, the Museum of Ontario Archeology (MOA) welcomed Elder Mary-Anne Kechego from Oneida Nation of the Thames, Turtle Clan, for a Harvest Teachings workshop. Elder Kechego started the day off with storytelling, corn husk doll making, and shared teachings around the three sisters – corn, squash and beans – and the harvest. The corn husk doll making was done with a group of children from the museum’s Forest Friends: Forest School program. The MOA and LOLA Bees partner to offer the program, with funding by Nature London, London Environment Network and Nshwaasnangong Family Centre. To learn more about the program, visit archaeologymuseum.ca/forest-friends. The teachings were followed by a delicious traditional corn soup – three sister soup – similar to the recipe below, and fry bread. Three Sisters Soup (served at the Museum of Ontario Archaeology’s Native Harvest Festival and Pow Wow. Ingredients

1 lb kidney beans 1 lb pinto beans 1 lb lima beans 6 – 8 large squash 2 kg frozen corn 6 large onions 2 lb vegetable stock powder 1 bag of vegetable flakes, dried 1 cup fresh sage 1 – 2 cups fresh parsley Directions This soup is prepared in and fills a 24-quart pot.

Add 1/2 the vegetable stock powder; 1/2 bag of vegetable flakes, garlic powder and salt and pepper, making sure all are well mixed and dissolved. Continue to cook for another two hours. Squash should be tender. Add frozen corn, and bring soup to boiling. Taste and determine if more stock and vegetable flakes should be added. If more vegetable flakes are added, cook until flakes are tender. Lower temperature to keep soup hot, but not boiling. Add fresh safe, chopped and summer until ready to serve. Add parsley, chipped when soup is to be served. The MOA, is located at 1600 Attawandaron Road in London, on the ancestral territory of Indigenous peoples, who today include the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Munsee-Delaware First Nations of this region, as well as the many Indigenous people who make London their home. The museum is dedicated to studying and sharing the human history and experience of living in the Great Lakes region of southwestern Ontario. Learn more at archaeologymuseum.ca. Recipe, and photos (including cover photo) courtesy of the MOA.

Soak kidney, pinto and lima beans overnight in fresh water. Drain in the morning. Cover beans with fresh water; enough to allow free movement of beans, and cook for two hours. On second day, peel and chop onions. Cook onions in butter or oil until softened. Add to soup base. Slice squash in half, seed and brush with vegetable oil. Roast in oven cut side down on baking trays at 350° until tender; about 30-45 minutes. Peel cooked squash. Mash 1/4 to 1/3 of the squash. This will thicken the stock. Cube remainder of the squash and add to the cooking beans. Squash should be tender.

Proper brushing and flossing, and eating a healthy diet, are key lessons.” “Children’s baby teeth are very important,” she continues. “They help children speak, chew, and smile. They also hold

space for their adult teeth that are still growing. If a baby tooth is lost too soon, it can affect the alignment of the adult teeth later. That’s why babies should go for their first dental exam after they get their first tooth.” Aria Dental Centre participates in the Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP), and also offers direct billing, and for uncovered procedures, affordable monthly payment plans. Neighbour of Note – Dr. Bonnie Schmidt “I started Let’s Talk Science as a graduate student at Western University in the early ‘90s in response to requests for science education support in London schools,” explains Dr. Bonnie Schmidt, CM, PHD, FRSC. At the time, Schmidt was completing her PhD in Physiology, as well as working as a teaching assistant and bartending at a local Irish pub, but was not too busy to notice the decline in research funding and grants. “For me, it was clear that something was missing from the community— access between the science and education communities—and I thought I could do something about it.” Let’s Talk Science quickly became a broader mandate, and when the organization grew too large for the university to house them, they chose to grow in Hyde Park. Let’s Talk Science’s national office has been in the Hyde Park community for decades now. You can usually find them at PondFest and other neighbourhood events, but their reach and impact are Canada- wide. “Our work is more important than ever as we help youth build skills they’ll need for their future, expand their career awareness and tackle misinformation,” says Schmidt, who also resides in the Hyde Park area. Let’s Talk Science is an award-winning, national, charitable organization committed to positively impacting every child in Canada, from early years through secondary school. “Through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education, we help youth learn to take risks, develop the persistence to find innovative solutions to real-world problems, and the competencies required to thrive in an ever-changing world. Our extensive volunteer network brings STEM directly into classrooms, reaching communities in every province and terri- tory. Meanwhile, our free programs, available in both English and French, have reached over 21 million youth, educators, and volunteers across Canada,” Schmidt reflects. Throughout its growth from a single outreach site 30 years ago to a non-profit with nationwide reach, many Londoners have been instrumental in shaping Let’s Talk Science into the organization it is today. Several continue to play key roles in its governance. Of the organization’s roughly 100 employees, nearly half reside in the London region, and many of them contribute to community projects such as the creation of the Let’s Talk Science pollinator barrel featured in the September 2025 Hyde Park-Oakridge Villager. Through the generous support of partners and donors, Let’s Talk Science provides educators with opportunities to discover and use effective learning strategies to develop and strengthen students’ questioning and problem-solving skills and offers both in-person

and digital programming that engages youth in meaningful STEM learning. From space innovation and quantum science to digital literacy and climate action, the organization helps bring the world of STEM to life in meaningful ways, preparing youth with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. To address the critical need of assuring Canada’s global com- petitiveness across various sectors, including skilled trades, agriculture, mining, healthcare, sustainable environmental so- lutions, and emerging technologies, by increasing STEM education access and opportunities for Canadian youth, Let’s Talk Science launched the “Inspire – Educate – Innovate” fundraising campaign in the fall of 2023 with a goal of raising $30 million over three years. Hyde Park-Oakridge Streets of Honour London’s Streets of Honour Policy encourages naming streets after London residents who served in the Armed Forces or London Police or Fire Departments or Emergency Measures Services or City of London Employees, Council and Committee members who have served the City for a period of 25 years or more, and are retired and/or deceased, and recipients of the Mayor’s Honour List. A poppy is featured on street signs of streets named for local armed forces personnel. There are several in the Hyde Park and Oakridge area. In this article, we feature three.

Reid Court was named in memory of Private Douglas Robert William Reid who served in the army during World War II. The son of William and Margaret Mary Jane Reid, and the husband of Audrey Reid of 599 Maitland Street, Douglas enlisted in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in March 1943 and was attached to the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment in the First Canadian Division. He was killed in action in Italy, by shrapnel, at age 21. He is buried in the Gradara War Cemetery in Italy. We will remember him. Couldridge Way was named for Flight Cadet William Henry Couldridge of Arva. William was born May 9, 1933 to Thomas and Costance Couldridge, and died on April 2, 1955 while on a routine flight. His T-33 Silver Star went down in the Fairmount Golf Course, now the Faimount subdivision, just 550 metres away from the home of John Allen Smith, age 21, who was piloting the plane. We will remember them. buried at Altendeich, exhumed, and reburied in the Becklingen War Cemetery at Soltau Germany. We will remember him.

Chapman Court was named for Flight Sergeant Kenneth F. Chapman, who served in the RCAF in World War II. Kenneth was born in London, March 28, 1926, the son of Ernest and Florence Chapman, and attended the Wortley Road Public School and South Colle- giate. He received his wings on April 21, 1944, and took part in the bombing raids on German railyards and oil storage faci- lities. 19 year old Chapman was reported missing, then reported killed in action, shot down at Altendeich, Germany while fly-

Neighbour of Note – Trudy Cloudt Trudy Cloudt’s parents, immigrants from the Netherlands, built their first house in Canada in Orchard Park, her father a carpenter. Trudy lived in the Hyde Park area most of her life. After moving away for university and travelling in Europe, Trudy returned to the Hyde Park area, close to familial roots, to raise her children. They played and explored Medway Creek and developed lasting friendships with neighbourhood children just as she had years prior. They were active members of local sports teams. Always an artist at heart, Trudy devoted her time to writing when her children were small. “It was something that I could carry with me and work on in short intervals. I filled numerous journals with daily musings, poems and short stories,” she says. As a passionate educator, she spent three decades teaching children French, Music and “good values”. Now that she is semi-retired, Trudy has more time to devote to writing. Her writing examines relationships, from interior family connections to external interactions and often, she says “the courage needed to survive them.” As a child, she was intrigued by stories that she heard her parents and the elders speak about around the kitchen table. “They told their entertaining tales as ordinary people doing ordinary things. I realized that their lives exemplified courage, resilience and kindness.” She feels that these are important messages that need to be shared with our generation and the generations to come. Trudy has published two short stories. The IOU can be found in Canada: Brave New World , an anthology edited by Elaine

Couglar of Peache House Press. Grandpa’s Harvest can be found in Out of The Woods – Voices from the Forest City , an anthology of short stories selected by Londoner Emma Donoghue and published by Indie Publishing Group.

Both books are available from Amazon or from the publishers. Out of the Woods is also available at Indigo and various bookstores in the area. She is working on her first novel. Learn more about the London Writers Society at londonwriterssociety.ca

Back in the Day

William Sherwood Fox One of Canada’s foremost champions of the cause of classical scholarship and of the humanities in Canada, William Sherwood Fox (1878 – 1967) evidenced titanic energy and match- less vigour during his long career of three decades at Western University, as teacher and administrator. Enlisted by Woodrow Wilson as assistant pro- fessor at Princeton, Fox later (1917) chose to decamp to London’s fledgling

university as professor of classics. His retirement was marked by the establishment of a memorial chair in classics. Throughout his years in Canada, Fox was a spirited advocate of archaeological reconstruction, a legacy from his training at Johns Hopkins. He worked energetically on behalf of restoration at St. Ignace in the Huron country of Georgian Bay, of reforestation, and of bilingualism among young Ontario students through summer programs at Trois Pistoles, Quebec. His devotion to botany, to natural phenomena, and to Izaak Walton was lifelong. William Sherwood Fox Public School on Steeplechase Drive, the Sherwood Fox Arboretum at Western University, Sherwood Ave., and Sherwood Mall on Wonderland Road were named after William Sherwood Fox.

Russ Brown (above, left) was among the 50 students at the Sherwood Forest Mall in 1974, aiming to set a new record for eating 1000 banana splits. Organized to publicize the United Way of Greater London, only 319 splits were devoured. Brown ate six. Photo courtesy Western Archives.
