LOCAL ARTIST PROFILE
Alice Price-Vermeulen by Peri Hayes Alice Price-Vermeulen cheerfully introduces her background in the creative arts: “From an early time of doing ‘paint by numbers’, I’ve always known I like to paint and I came to realize I preferred it to other mediums.” Throughout her life, Alice has also experimented with batik, pottery, printmaking, sewing, weaving and the decorative arts. “Nothing satisfies me more, however,” Alice proceeds, “than to apply paint to canvas.” Growing up in London, Alice received art training through Bealart and Fanshawe College -- which included minimal focus on painting in the grand scheme of her studies, as she recounts. There are always layers of colour and texture, with careful
emphasis on shape and design. I love colour and it weaves its spirited way through my work.” Until recently, Alice had been a long-term member of a dynamic Collage Group led by Sarah Cowling’s uplifting leadership. Alice shares an artistic discovery: “I learned that although collage is an amazing art form of its own, it has a place with other art forms as well. I often add collage elements to my paintings. I particularly like to add painted transparent paper to build depth and texture.” “I love the quiet of the early morning,” Alice delightedly details while conveying her preferred time of day to create, “to set
