Make an Impact: Nominate a Local Business for the 2026 Chamber Impact Awards Each year, the St. Thomas & District Chamber of Commerce shines a spotlight on the businesses and individuals that help make our community thrive. The annual Impact Awards celebrate excellence, innovation and leadership, and nominations are now open until November 17. “It brings together our whole community to acknowledge the accomplishments of others,” says Jennifer Babcock, Chair of the Impact Awards. “We get to share in their success, congratulate them for a job well done, and connect businesses of all sizes at one event that’s about collaboration and support.” Anyone can submit a nomination, and it’s easier than you might think. “There’s a form on the Chamber’s website,” explains Christy Hunking, Chief Membership Coordinator. “You can nominate as many businesses as you like, even your own.” Nominations are accepted in seven categories, including Business of the Year, New Business of the Year, Inspirational Woman, Circle of Excellence, Mayor’s Choice (which alternates annually with Champions of the Earth), and Young Professional of the Year. This year’s Young Professional Award carries special meaning; it will now be presented as the Barry Fitzgerald Young Professional Award, recognizing his years of dedication to Junior Achievement and mentoring young entrepreneurs across Elgin County. “It’s a wonderful way to continue Barry’s legacy of inspiring future leaders,” Christy adds. Jennifer emphasizes that a thoughtful nomination can make all the difference. “We really encourage people to share stories, not just a sentence or two. Tell us why this business stands out, how they’ve made an impact, or what they’ve done for the community. The more heartfelt and detailed your nomination, the stronger it is.” A selection committee made up of last year’s winners reviews the nominations, ensuring a new panel every year. “It’s not a popularity contest,” Christy says. “When the committee reads those stories, they often discover businesses or people they didn’t know about before. That’s what makes it so special.” Being nominated can be a meaningful boost for local businesses. “It shows that the community appreciates what they do,” Jennifer says. “Many see more customers, more recognition, and a sense of pride that they’re making a difference.” So, if there’s a business or individual that’s made a positive mark on your life or community, don’t keep it a secret; nominate them.
