Head Lice Inspection Policy and Protocol

Dear Parent and/or Youth Leader:

Word of Life Camps have a “No Nit” policy for head lice. At Word of Life The Coast, we use all means possible to hinder the spreading of the lice, including mandatory inspection by our trained personnel on every camper prior to admittance to camp.

Your camper may have had contact with someone who has head lice and was found to have the nits (eggs) of head lice prior to coming to camp.

Our procedure when finding nits or head lice is as follows: 1.We will inform the youth leader or parent who brought the camper to camp. 2.We will allow one chance for the camper to get treated and return to camp. To do this, please follow these instructions: a.The youth leader or parent must take the camper off Word of Life property, purchase a head lice treatment kit and treat the camper with the shampoo as directed and carefully comb the hair. It is best to comb through small sections ¼ inch at a time so you do not miss removing any of the nits. This process will take a few hours. b.All of the camper bedding and 2 days of clothes (including clothes worn at the time of registration) must be washed in hot water & dried at high heat at a place other than Word of Life (Laundromat or home). All the rest of the clothing can be put in a plastic bag & stored in the leader’s vehicle for 48 hours. Pillows, stuffed animals or things not able to be washed must be sealed in a plastic bag for 48 hours. c.The camper must be rechecked by one of the nurses’ staff before being allowed to move into a cabin or participate in camp meetings or activities. The best time for this is 7:00- 9:00 pm on registration day in the Nurse’s Station or after 9:00 am the next day in the Nurse’s Station. d.If the camper is still found to have nits, the camper will be sent home.

When the camper returns home, the health department recommends: Recheck for nits daily for a week. Repeat treatment one week after the first treatment

Vacuum furniture, carpet and mattresses daily for a week. Do not use fumigant sprays; they can be toxic if inhaled. Immediately discard vacuum cleaner bag or waste in trash bag and seal. Do not share combs, brushes, hair ties, etc. If your camper has to be sent home, we will allow a 100% refund or admittance to a different week of camp if possible. Because we care about you and your camper, we want to make you aware of this situation.
