“Signature” quilts and “worms” at museum

DUNVEGAN | Fibre art enthusiasts with an interest in genealogy will have a field day, and get to use a “bucket of worms” at the upcoming Glengarry Pioneer Museum’s Quilts & Fibre: From then ‘til now exposi- tion June 28 and 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. One of the highlights of the two-day event will be a display of the two“signature”quilts from the Museum’s collection. The earliest of these heirlooms is the MacDiarmid Sig- nature Crazy Quilt. Created at the end of the 1800s by Isabella Cameron MacDiarmid, it contains the names of women residing in and around Maxville and Dunvegan. Some of the family names that have been preserved for posterity are Waryott, Sproule, Robinson, McIntyre, McRae and Tully. The second signature quilt is a bit more recent. Stitched in 1957, the museum acquired it from the MacCrimmon Ladies VANKLEEK HILL | “Cityscapes: Collages in Cloth and Stitch”is the theme of a solo exhibition by artist Heather Dubreuil being held between now and August 17 at Arbor Gallery in Vankleek Hill. A vernissage will take place Sunday, June 22 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. “My cityscapes show the radiant trans- formation of an everyday exterior through the expressive potential of colour,” Du- breuil writes in her artist’s statement. “I create sensuous, aesthetic delight by a careful consideration of form and compo- sition. I see my work in cloth and stitch as a contemporary expression of the culture of women’s needlework.” Says curator Shanna Steals: “With each line that is sewn and each square of fabric that is collaged together, Dubreuil uses the technique of quilting to piece together parts of our mechanical landscape as well as our heritage. Her pieces are reminiscent of modern painterly landscapes; bright and colourful geometrical shapes create a tapestry of lush compositions where buil-

Orange Benevolent Association. “Area fami- lies paid 25¢ and 50¢ to have their name in- corporated,” says event spokesperson, Terry Sweitzer. “From MacCrimmon, MacLeod, Donaldson, Grant and Fraser to MacGilli- vray, Kennedy, Urquhart, MacCaskill, Frank- lin, Stewart and many others.” In addition to historic and contemporary quilts, the exhibition will feature vintage hooked rugs from the collection, as well as modern rugs made locally. Plus there will be examples of weaving, lace-making and other fibre art from the museum’s col- lection and the community at large, along with a fascinating display of antique sewing implements. Visitors will have an opportunity to learn first-hand about spinning, weaving, cross- stitch, crochet and knitting. Respected artist and crafter Ruby Mac-

Gregor, of Maxville, will be bringing her vintage rug-hooking frame and a “bucket of worms” (wool strips) for people to try their hand at this increasingly popular art form. And, for the younger set, there will be demonstrations of how to knit without needles — using just one’s hands and fin- gers. “There’ll even be an introduction to the painstakingly beautiful art of Japanese embroidery, bunka shishu,” Sweitzer points out.

For those who are already fibre arts en- thusiasts or those looking to get started, the museum has invited a number of craft- ing supply vendors to the show. The list includes “BAA BAA Bundles” purveyors of reclaimed wool, silks, velvets, funky fibers and fat quarters; “Hooked on the Lake” with its collection of patterns and beauti- ful wool fabrics, many of which have been over-dyed; and the “Fabric Box”, specialists in quilting and sewing supplies of all kinds.
