EXPOSITION AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS vs. 14-1 6. “And, when the.f'.brought out Were other copies of the law of the Lord
in the land, and probably Josiah had seen such copies, but had never read them with any fullness or care. It is no proof what ever that the law was not in existence because the people did not obey it, even to the leading people. This is a favorite argument with the destructive critics, but there is absolutely no force in it. How “the law of the LORD” could become a forgotten book will be very easily under stood by anyone familiar’with the history of the Bible in the dark ages, and how it, though it was believed to be the Word of God, became a practically forgotten book. Jehovah had given charge that each king should have a copy of this “law” and should read therein all the days of his life (Deut. 17:18, 19) but the kings had for gotten both Jehovah and His Word, just as many kings in recent time, though pro fessing to be Christians and who are at the head of Christian nations, forget both God and His Word. Real prosperity and success depends upon meditating upon the Word of God day and night and in observ ing to do according to alj that is written therein (Josh. 1:8; Ps. 1:1-6). Ruin awaits the man who casts away the “law of the LORD of Hosts,” and despises the Word of the Holy One of Israel (Isa. 5 :24). Hilkiah having found the law passed it on to others and thus gave rise to ? great reformation. No one has a right
the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of the LORD given by Moses. And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found, the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Sha phan and Shaphan carried the book to the king, and moreover brought the king word, again, saying, All that wai committed to thy servants, they do it." The manuscript of the law of thp LORD found by Hilkiah in the temple was presumably the very one written by Moses (cf. Deut. 31:24-26). The supposition of the destructive critics that the so called law of Moses was invented at this time and that it was not a discovery of the manuscript before existing, is with out foundation in fact. Their theory wou)d turn ' Hilkiah the great reformer into a great liar and fraud. It speaks badly of one’s own heart to be so ready to suspect everyone else of falsehood. This is the constant temper of the “Higher Criticism.” Why is it? There are fifteen places in the ^ Old Testament that mention the “Law of Moses,” “the book of Moses,” and only this one place which mentions “the book of the law of the LORD by the hand of Moses.” By the hand of Moses is the exac» rendering of the Hebrew, translated both in the American Version and Revised Ver sion “given by Moses.” Presumably there
