Extreme softness
MANUFACTURING NOBLE FIBRES SINCE 1808 Since its foundation under the First Empire, Brun de Vian-Tiran has been pursuing its dedication to combining rigorous selection and a constant search for the most beautiful natural fibres in the world, with design inspired by nature and inventivemanufacturing. Your daily life can thus be enhanced by totally authentic softness, reflecting the gentle lifestyle of the ancient town which saw the beginnings of the company and where it continues to thrive today: Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, in Provence.
brun de Vian-tiran A NAME, A HISTORY In 1808, Charles Tiran joined his son-in-law, Laurent Vian, in creating a fulling mill on the banks of the Sorgue River. Two generations later, Emile Brun married Laurent’s granddaughter and the company was renamed Brun de Vian-Tiran. Eight generations and more than 200 years later, their direct descendants,PierreBrunandhissonJean-Louis, arecontinuing the adventure. Worker families, true craftsmen and women with a deep love of noble fibres, have also accompanied the factory through several generations. Brun de Vian-Tiran, like the elegance and natural refinement of our fabrics, is timeless.
2
8 GENERATIONS OF INNOVATION, TWO DEDICATED MANAGERS
Pierre Brun, a textile engineer with fifty years of rich experience, working with his wool merchant friend Claude Gutapfel, rediscovered and built up the herds of very special Merino sheep which produce the finest wool in Europe: the trademarked Mérinos d’Arles Antique ® . He also invented and perfected a metal teasel which is unique in the world to create the fluffiness of his fabrics, and has preserved the fifteen specialized skills necessary for the preparation of these marvels in France. “In our company, true progress is based on tradition.” Pierre Brun, 7 th generation
Agronomist, oenologist and PhD in Cognitive Sciences,
Jean-Louis Brun first expressed his love for materials, know-how and travel while making fine wines on three different continents. Today he has committed Brun de Vian-Tiran not just to international co-operation research projects into rare materials, but also to a dialogue with the general public through a sensorial museum project devoted to noble fibres which has opened in 2018 in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. “The rawmaterials await our skills to bring out their full beauty, and our actions thus shape the world.” Jean-Louis Brun, 8 th generation

A NEVER-ENDING QUEST FOR THE GREATEST POSSIBLE SOFTNESS Mérinos d’Arles Antique ® from the South of France, Mongolian baby camel from Khomyn Tal in the Gobi Desert… It takes years of partnerships to rediscover an outstanding type of wool and gain a thousandth of a millimetre in fibre fineness. This is the price willingly paid to enhance the softness and comfort of our final products even further. Merino, Mohair, Alpaca, Cashmere… Brun de Vian-Tiran is constantly seeking, engaged in a never-ending quest for the greatest material and immaterial softness.
EXCLUSIVITY Mérinos d’Arles Antique®, a thirty year adventure with the shepherds To enable French woollen mills to produce softer fabrics, Louis XVI had Spanish merinos imported in order to cross them with French sheep. The wonderful fineness thus obtained seemed unfortunately to have been lost due to further cross-breeding in the 1930s... until Pierre Brun, the 7 th generation managing the family’s Brun de Vian-Tiran factory, began his quest for the Mérinos d’Arles Antique ® with the help of the wool merchant Claude Gutapfel. Seven years of research led to this legendary fineness being rediscovered in the flock belonging to the late André Eychennes. Thirty years later, the ewes and rams of the long-lost breed had, in contributing to the renewal of 15 sheep breeders’ flocks, enabled herds totalling 25,000 animals to be raised. They produce the finest wool in Europe, exclusively for our factory. All the outstanding qualities of this very warm, soft wool are expressed in the factory’s product ranges.
4
RESPECT & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Khomyn Tal baby camel
A meeting with some NGOs enabled the identification of an exceptionally fine, soft type of baby camel hair in the Khomyn Tal region of Mongolia. Jean-Louis Brun, 8th generation to manage the Brun de Vian-Tiran factory, undertook a sustainable development and eco-responsible partnershipwith the nomads there. The animal breeders receive a higher income and the economic development contributes simultaneously to meeting ecological challenges.
Innovation A very unique teasel
The natural teasel, stem of an inflorescence cultivated since ancient times, long enabled the soft fleeciness of fabrics to be lifted. When it disappeared as a crop in the 1990s, textile industries had to seek out other technical solutions. But Brun de Vian-Tiran remained faithful to the principle of the traditional teasel. Pierre Brun, 7 th generation to manage the factory, led twenty years of research and development to create a biomimetic metal teasel, which reproduces the delicacy and efficiency of the natural teasel to give fabrics which are both soft and resistant.
5
CREATIONS INSPIRED BY NATURE
The world becomes more gentle with Brun de Vian-Tiran’s creations, inspired by Nature and revealing all the softness it can offer. Beautiful raw materials - and Nature - respond so well when treated with respect! Our fabrics thus express the unique features and personalities of these noble fibres, preparing them to be part of the lives of equally unique people.
NATURAL FIBRES The result of natural selection over millions of years, wool-type fibres have been created by Nature to envelop and protect many mammal species. Their unique ability to regulatehumiditygives themoutstandingpropertieswhich contribute to our well-being. The healthy microclimate they create makes them a thermal regulator as well as an excellent ally in the fight against allergies.

EXCELLENCE PARTNERSHIP Brun de Vian-Tiran brings in young designers
For the last few years, Brun de Vian-Tiran has been involved in a partnership with the French National School of Industrial Creation (ENSCI) Textile Design Workshops, in Paris. This is an excellence partnership in which the Masters students, who have already graduated from the best art trades schools, contribute their creativity and their high level of technical know-how. Able to work with the constraints and the assets of our factory’s production tools, the students design a collection-capsule each year which is selected and produced by Brun de Vian-Tiran. “A partnership which is both inspirational and rigorous.” Marion Lévy, Director of ENSCI-Design Textile

MEN AND WOMEN, HUMAN SKILLS
Our factory is an industry in which human intervention remains dominant. The Brun de Vian-Tiran factory relies on skills acquired during more than two centuries of experience working on highly complex products: prestige blankets, for which we are the leader in France. Our teams, artisans in noble fibres, know they can count on their skilled hands and eyes for each step in the process, and contribute extreme care to the quest for perfection. They can thus create fabrics destined to be totally soft and comfortable.
FROM THE FIBRE TO THE THREAD: SPINNING The wools are sourced from the five continents, and arrive in our Isle-sur-la-Sorgue factory in bales. Here, our treasury of fibres in reserve can meet our needs for several years! The first step in their transformation is spinning: the fibres will be sorted and aligned by the carding machine, a complex mechanical process, to give a “sliver”. This band of fibres will then be lengthened and twisted on the ring spinner to give a thread.
FROM THE THREAD TO THE FABRIC: WEAVING Next, weaving will criss-cross the longitudinal warp threads with the transversal weft material. There are hundreds of ways to interweave these threads, depending on the type of fabric we wish to create: light or thick, feltability, patterned effect...
8
FROM THE FABRIC TO THE FINAL CLOTH: THE FINISHING Fabric finishing basically consists in fulling - or felting - the fabric, then gently scratching it with teasels to raise the nap. Fulling was the original trade of Brun de Vian-Tiran in 1808, and has never stopped being a speciality of the factory. It is a little-known but essential step, and gives our cloths their extended longevity. The operation is still carried out using teasels: in certain cases natural teasels and in others metal teaselswhichareunique toBrundeVian-Tiran, inorder tobring out all the softness and character of the natural fibres while preserving the fabric.
FROMTHE CLOTHTO YOU: THE FINAL PRODUCT Finally, the cloth is cut and possibly edged, labelled and stored, ready to be delivered with no delays. The process will have taken fifteen steps altogether, requiring 3 weeks of work. For each of the steps carried out machines have always been at the service of human skills: constant attention and care, exercised by craftspeople with a wealth of experience gained during over 17 years of experience on average, the worthy heirs of a know-how passed down to eager apprentices for over two centuries.

Dear customers,
L e s R A F F I N É E S We are proud that our factory bears witness to skills with a real meaning, to the preservation of local employment, to loyalty to a supply chain linking the animal breeders through to our boutiques and your homes, and to our daring choice of natural materials and methods. Our heartfelt thanks to you all for being our ambassadors and our partners! In our Spring-Summer 2021 catalogue you discovered the total lightness of our Levant bed veils with their pattern inspired by Cholet’s handkerchief, as well as Tribu ethnic throws, the Herbiers inspired by Mediterranean flora, and the Provence shawls named after the writer Pagnol’s heroines, all present in this new catalogue. At a timewhenwearegraduallyrecoveringour freedomofmovement, each of us is hoping to see a wiser world adopt values of respect, of good will, and of a more responsible attitude towards nature and the future generations - for the good of all. Now we can offer you Autumn-Winter, reflecting the state of mind we feel may lead to a softer world. This could come through sober, essential elegance with City and Junin, large throws – or blankets, as you prefer – in modern shades with a simple scalloped finishing. Perhaps you will want to unleash the joy and exuberance expressed by the vibrant Paysages and iridescent vintage-style Chamarrés, two widely different expressions of Mohair, the noble fibre our company was the first to work with on the European continent.
With you in making this world a softer place!

This blanket combines the softness of Cashmere with the gleaming brilliance of Mohair. A unique aesthetic pleasure, surprising softness, outstanding well-being…
