Technology: access or another layer of exclusion? In those global discussions, digital transformation came up repeatedly. On one hand, technology has opened markets and information in ways that were unimaginable a generation ago. Women can now: Sell to customers around the world from their living rooms Learn new skills and access expertise online Use digital tools to manage and scale their businesses Build networks and collaborators across the world On the other hand, many women are still invisible in the digital economy particularly in rural communities, informal work, and micro- businesses. They may lack: Reliable internet access and devices Digital skills and confidence The time, money, and support to get online and stay there
Funding: Women, and especially women of colour, receive a tiny fraction of available investment and lending. Brilliant ideas stall because the money never reaches them. Networks: Opportunities still move through closed circles. If you are not “in the room” or in the online group you may never hear about the deal, the grant, or the partnership. Confidence : It is tempting to frame this purely as a personal issue, but confidence is shaped by years of working in systems that question, minimise or appropriate women’s ideas. “The issue is not a shortage of ambition or creativity. The issue is the infrastructure (or lack of it) around women’s ambition.”
Technology should be a bridge, not a barrier.
If we are serious about women as economic architects, digital access, skills, and safety must be part of the conversation, not an afterthought.
