The Special Recognition Award is presented to individuals who have enhanced the electrical sector through their dedication and tireless hard work. George Samuel Stothers, affectionately known as ‘Sam’, has done just that for the past four decades. Sam’s story as an entrepreneur started after a shock revelation that he and his colleagues would be made redundant within a mere 24 hours, at a critical juncture during a large-scale project. Colt Group, the project’s suppliers, recognised Sam’s exceptional skills and approached him with a proposition to establish his own venture to ensure the project’s continuity. Responding swiftly to the challenge, G.S Stothers was founded, becoming the sole distributor for Colt Group in Northern Ireland. Thanks to the strong relationships Sam forged throughout his career, G.S Stothers flourished. Sam took the initiative to build a warehouse from scratch, marking the beginning of the company’s venture into manufacturing smoke and fire curtains. This expansion propelled them into the realm of smoke control within the industry and established them as Northern Ireland’s Smoke Control Specialists. G.S Stothers remains a family-run business, with Sam as Technical Director, Sam’s wife, Maureen still in position as Accounts Director, and son Jonney Stothers taking the reins of the company as Managing Director. Sam’s initiative, hard work and discipline are an example to everyone in the industry.
Peter McKearney didn’t just simply take over his father’s business in 2002. Initially a small family-run business that concentrated on domestic and small industrial installations, PMcK Electrical Contractors began to flourish under Peter’s leadership as he built on the knowledge from an HND in Electrical Engineering and years of exposure to his family trade. Through sheer hard work, modern innovation and determination, Peter saw the company go from strength to strength as they secured contracts worth millions of pounds all over the UK and Ireland. This exponential growth never stopped Peter from caring about his local community, as PMcK is proud of creating many jobs in the local economy. The company also keeps a tradition of employing, developing and retaining apprentices. Some of their very best people joined the business through this route and have flourished in their careers with Peter’s support. Peter also gives back generously to the local community by sponsoring and promoting local community events, such as the Moy’s annual village Christmas Lights, road races, donation of prizes to local Moy GAC raffles, and sponsoring Lurgan College’s rugby team, among other endeavours. Peter’s entire professional life has been dedicated to excelling in the electrical industry. His striving for excellence in all that he does is the driver of PMcK’s success.
